Walmart, You Did it Again: Sort Of

Explain to me how it is possible to ring up a watermelon out of literal thin air? It requires a sticker that is presumably on the watermelon itself with a bar code, or you have to manually enter it. Explain to me how anything could be rung up that didn't exist on the belt? There have been several times when something was double rung. Beer for example. On three occasions I was double charged for a 30-pack of Miller Lite. On the third event I told the store, "I think this is being done on purpose." And I made that claim because it was three consecutive purchases on three different dates done by three different cashiers. That's not an accident. On one occasion I was double charged for a Great Value 2 pound package of ham lunch meat. While I still contend at least the beer was on purpose. Even the beer and the ham are explainable to a degree. At least the items were actually on the belt and in my cart. But yesterday I went to Walmart and spent around $87 and unfortunately didn't check my receipt until I got home—something I have said before I would not do but would check it before I left the store because of all of these overcharges that seem so frequent at Walmart. I bought a 30-pack of Miller Lite, a package of ham lunch meat, a pair of shorts for my wife, 3 bottles of Powerade, a bag of cat food and a 12-count package of canned cat food. The guy in front of me didn't even buy any food. Just a bunch of pillows and blanets and what not. And there was no one behind me in the lane. But I was charged $4.68 for a watermelon. That didn't exist. Again, without a very specific code how in the world did a watermelon just magically appear on my bill? I called and told them about it and of course I have to go back to get a refund. But it did also seem strange to me that there were no questions at all when I said I didn't buy one. "Just bring your receipt back and we'll refund you." Almost as if they knew they sold 200 watermelons that day that are still in the bin.

That is very weird. I'd have to find out the code for watermelon and see if it was similar to something that I was buying. I try to always check my receipt, So many errors, (not Walmart though) I don't live near town so it's a nuisance. Once it was the receipt checker at Costco who noticed I was double charged for something.

I do not like people who make errors especially where money is involved!

I can't prove it, but sometimes it just seems like this is happening intentionally. I try to pay as much attention to my receipts as possible, but sometimes you happen to just be in a rush and you don't catch an error until you've already left the store.

@porwest I hate when I miss it, because I don't live near town.

I'm glad they'll refund you for the watermelon you didn't buy.

@just4him It's worth it. Not like $5 is going to break the bank or anything. But $5 is $5.

I haven't been able to get back for my refund yet. But they better not give me any trouble at all or else.

That is not good, I have the feeling that the cashier bring food home and he/she charges the amount to the clients who have more items. I would inform the manager.

It's just so strange to me that an item not even on the belt rang up. I mean, I've been overcharged, and even double charged, but never for a phantom item. lol

Gee that's crazy. I've never experienced any double charges when I shop there nor have I been charged for a watermelon that didn't exist. Something is not right with your Walmart.

@porwest it wouldn't surprise me if something fishy was going on there. Hope you hear from the investor relations person.

That's what I am thinking. It could be the manager is trying to boost performance numbers or something? Maybe for a bonus? I sent a letter as a shareholder to investor relations to see if they could look into the store. Who knows if anything comes of it.

Sorry to hear that. I'm glad I place my orders online. Had a strange occurrence today. 90% of the items I tried to put in my cart were out of stock. So weird. Hope you and Dawn have a good weekend.

@porwest Glad you had a good weekend. You're welcome. As I mentioned in another post, it was my dumb error that the items showed out of stock.

It's a shame they get away with that. As if the company really needs the money. But it's totally wrong no matter what size company it is.

Exactly. Theft is theft. I can't prove it is being done intentionally, but it sure seems very suspect to me. As a shareholder I shared my concerns and provided the multiple incidents through investor relations. I have not received a response yet, but when they provide one, I will likely share what they say.

The common denominator is always the local Walmart here. That makes it very suspect it's not an accident.

I don't shop at Wal Mart very often, and when I do it's mostly for canned cat food. Our "Local" Wal Mart was remodeled and turned into garbage, so I really have to need whatever it is for me to make the 15 mile jaunt by transit bus to the store. I may get to go next Tuesday as I am going up to a meeting and have arranged a ride with one of the neighbors who is going up. But I check the receipt before I even leave the check stand...it annoys the people behind me but I really don't care. Money is money!!!! And right now every penny counts.
