Paid the wrong bill amount

I went to see what bills still need to be paid for my mom and I noticed that while I paid her electric bill on time I entered the amount for my house instead of hers. I was $2.53 short. I paid the remaining balance but the due date already passed. I hope they won't charge her 1.5% late fee for that. That would suck. And it's frustrating because I double check everything before I press to submit payment.

I also hope that the bill you paid recently will not be charged the late fee for your being short on the total amount.

In the event they will charge it I wonder if it will be based on the amount I underpaid or on the total.

@lovebuglena Most likely the amount that was underpaid.

Sometimes even double checking you miss a mistake.

It is frustrating because I checked things before submitting payment.

Not sure about NY, but down here in FL they have never charged me a late fee ever...have been late a few times..especially when my SS check used to come in the middle of the month instead of the first like it does now. Hope they don't charge you.

I usually never miss a payment for my mom's bills so not sure if they do or not but on the bill it always says to pay by a certain date to avoid a late fee.

I have many similar situations. Last year, I paid at last minute for few folks and worse , the gateway showed success but later mailed failure. I saw the message after the due date. Even, after explaining to the authorities , there was no luck. Had to pay 5% penalty for each payment and that was a huge loss. Post that i ensure that payment is done way before the due date and check on the status of things. Double checking helps!

5% penalty is not that low. Sucks that they weren't able to let it go.

I would think they wouldn’t since it was almost the entire thing. They wouldn’t do that here, but then this is Oklahoma. New York is tougher on stuff like that, I imagine.

I am glad I caught it, though it was past the due date. Will have to see when the bill comes if they charge her that or not.

If they have any humanity they will forgive the mistake and not charge any late fees. I hope let us know.

@lovebuglena .......They should show some leniency then. It's the ones that don't pay on time and always have a stupid excuse that they would be less apt to give a break to I think.

I hope so too. Bills are always paid on time.

They shouldn'tbecause the system will realize there's a pending payment. Most companies wait until the bill closes before they tack on late fees, in case something like this happens and there's a delay.

I paid the those few bucks on the 25th and that is when the new bill generates. But the payment won't be received until tomorrow I'd think as I did it through the bank website and not directly.

I’ve done that before as well. And even worse, back before online bill pay when you had to mail in a check, I once mixed up my electric bill and credit card bill and mailed the checks to the wrong places. That was fun trying to get that all sorted out.

Oh wow! That must have been a headache to deal with. I once paid a water bill for my mom's house and then when it was time to pay the bill for my house I paid her account again. Thankfully, I realized that before the due date passed and was able to pay my bill. Her account had a credit balance and when it was time to pay the new bill I just paid the difference.

@lovebuglena Thankfully I use online bill pay for all my bills now, so the days of mixing up payments are long gone.

@moffittjc I used my mom's online Chase account through which I pay pretty much most of the bills. And that is where I made the mistake lol. There's her house and her other house where we live. So that's two sets of the same utilities to pay. Easy to make a mistake and pay the wrong one. Thankfully, it's rare that it happens.

It's up to the bots. We are still paying for the fires PG&E caused here, including the "Pleasure" (actually Paradise) fire. They paid the fines and then raised our rates.

Wow! Why did they do that?

@lovebuglena Why? Or how? They did not maintain their equipment well. They started forest fires.

You could call them and let them know what happened. They can probably take care of it for you. Have a good day.

They'll probably charge the late fee. You could try to call and dispute it. But they will definitely charge you, I am almost 100% certain about that.

I have a feeling they might. I just hope it won't be for the full amount. If only I had noticed it sooner than the passing of the due date.

Update: I just went to the online electricity account and looked at the bill. It still says we owe the difference but that is because the payment went through after the new bill was already generated. I do not see any late fee in the bill.
