Sinkhole accident in Illinois last month.

It is a good thing that no one was at the soccer fields at the Gordon F. Moore Community Park in Alton Ilinois on June 26 when a huge sinkhole swallowed large chunks of soccer field and a light pole around 8:30 am local time. The cause of the sinkhole was when one of the mines which is located about 150 feet below fields three and four collapsed. New Frontier Materials which is the company that owns the mines sent engineers to assess the damages. The soccer fields will be closed for an indefinite period of time so that repairs to the damaged area can be taken care of. Link is upi.com/7901719150641 via @upi

This is terrible! And from some responses, I see that it is not the first time it happens.

As you say, it was lucky no-one was in the area. Surely it means that there are mines underneath all those playing fields which would be scary too.

I've read that fracking is responsible for most sink holes, I just pray it doesn't happen here

I hope that your area never deals with a sinkhole.

I’m kind of amazed no one saw a sink hole coming when mines were down so far. Maybe I think situations are clearer than they really are.

I'm glad no one was playing soccer that early in the morning when the mine collapsed, causing a sink hole.

Perhaps the mining company was trying to undermine the soccer field, and change it into a golf course, with a huge hole in one, easy to putt into.

There is a massive mine below property about 10 miles from here; but most of it is out over Lake Erie. Have a good day.

Practically right in my neck of the woods. That was big news here. We have a LOT of mines throughout this region and so mine subsidence is a common thing around here. We recently had our local Ruler Foods store close due to it, although a sinkhole did not open up.

@Deepizzaguy It's about 40 minutes or so from where I live, so it was all over TV for sure here. But it did, of course, make national headlines.

@porwest On ABC Evening News it was a small segment. I figured that it would be a huge deal in your market like a tragic event would be headlines in the Lake Charles market.
