The Farmer's Almanac always has some interesting reading. Here is a list of signs that there will be a harsh winter:
* If your locally grown corn has thicker husks than usual.
* If hornet's nests are higher than normal( you can predict snow levels by this as well)
* Ants marching a line rather than meandering.
* Heavy fog in August.
* Racoons with brighter banding.
* Pigs gathering sticks.
* Thick hair on the nape of a cow's neck.
* Squirrels gather nuts early and are fluffy.
* Crickets early arrival on your hearth.

I hadn't either. The Farmer's Almanac is so interesting. It's been around for many years and picked up a lot of information a long the way.

I read something similar in the Little House series (A Long Cold Winter) about signs if there's going to be a harsh winter.

@celticeagle I think it's when the ground hogs make an exceptionally tall "hill" is when a harsh winter is likely to come.

I am seeing more squirrels than usual, and they are probably gathering nuts. It is only the beginning of August, and I have not seen any fog yet, but the early morning drive will be when it is apparent.

I didn't know about any of those except for the squirrels. Gathering nuts and having extra fluffy tails always signified a harsh winter.

We're supposed to have a colder winter because of La Nina or El Nino....I forget which one. Have a good day.
