Oh I am pissed off

Many years ago my parents decided to move my paternal grandparents from their large home to a smaller one in a local retirement community. Being an Italian family we all just chip in to get jobs like that done. It must have been one Saturday when we were all at the house packing things up, throwing things away, etc. when my cousin and I worked with Grandma to go through her clothes, jewelry, etc. Grandma was in her mid-80s at that point and had had a couple of strokes. Her mind was still there but she wasn't very verbal unless she had to be. So she would nod or shake her head when we asked if she wanted us to pack something. Then one of us grabbed a t-shirt from the dresser and Grandma immediately said "there's money in that!" Sure enough there was. We gave the shirt-wrapped money to my dad and he counted over $15,000 in cash. We were still laughing at that when my cousin and I found a stash of savings bonds in everyone's name. $10,000 for the two sons and $1000 each for the four grandchildren. No one presumably except Grandma knew they existed. . . so we thought. This was like in maybe 2010 or around then. So I've had that bond all of this time. I mailed it in to cash it out last month because I needed the money. Well I received a letter from the Treasury Department today saying that the bond issued in April of 2001 was reported missing on Feb 4 of 2002 and the replacement bond was cashed out on Feb 14 2002. WTF. I certainly didn't do that since I didn't even know it existed until like a decade later. I texted my mother and sister to warn them that their bonds likely weren't worth anything and my sister said the same thing happened to her. I texted my ex this afternoon just to fill him in on the craziness and said "that is some shady $hit" and said it sounded with something my uncle would do. He agreed that it was both shady and something my uncle totally would do. Oh well. Not getting the money. The good news is that my bank account is less frightening than it was. I'll be fine without it. I just think it is awful that a family member would screw over others in the family for money.

That’s pathetic. I hope someone confronted him at some point in time.

I know what you mean. I would be hella pissed off if I foound out that that money was gone just like that. Sounds like something my family would do if my parents had left me any money.

That really is the pits. My nephew tried to cheat his Mum out of a heap of shares but luckily he got stopped before he was able to clinch the deal.

Happens all the time. I speak to my SIL now; and my BIL has passed away; but I never did forgive them for the way they tore their parents' house apart when they passed. They took everything that they could carry, including some cash and collectible coins. Have a good day.

That is horrible, to go behind someone's back like that. And were they not in individual names? Sorry I don't know how those bonds work. At any rate glad your financial situation is a bit better!

I know it's too late to confront the person and I suppose there is no hard proof, but still...this was a horrible thing to do. She meant for the money to go to the designated people. I'm so sorry.
