As I’ve said numerous times, it would be next to impossible to put these in an order of 1-100. Having said this, here’s a song that’s definitely top five…probably top three. No question: this was one of the first songs I listed. And here it is! If You Could Read My Mind - Gordon Lightfoot You offer me a billion dollars to never hear this song again, and I’m just going to laugh at you. A trillion dollars? NO! This song is simply too amazing to go without hearing. This isn’t the song that made me cry when Gordon passed away last year. That honor went to “That Same Old Obsession.” This is the one I turned to for solace. Gord’s gone, but he was here…and he left this for all time. If You Could Read My Mind Written by Gordon Lightfoot Recorded by Gordon Lightfoot From Sit Down Young Stranger, 1970 Peak chart position: #5 Today’s country song: “Guitar Town” I walk away like a movie star:

This one always gave me goosebumps, I really don't see how it ended up as a pop song, it's more of an easy listening song.

Well, pop is short for “popular,” not so much a genre of music. Led Zeppelin was popular, but not “pop.” I use pop in the title because I’ll freely admit that the Platters song I used is NOT “rock and roll.”

@rebelann — he started as a folkie, so you’d never expect him battling with Brian Johnson for AC/DC lead singing duties.

I have always loved this song. He had so much feeling in his voice.

He wrote it about a divorce, so that does tend to bring out the emotional side.

@FourWalls Yes, he did. One of my other favorites is the Edmund Fitzgerald song. One of my Dad's friends was on that boat.

I’m totally with you here. I’ve always loved this song and would have it in my top ten for sure. It usually leaves me feeling melancholy, which is weird, but it just does something to me I can’t really explain that makes me love it so. Time in a Bottle by Jim Croce does exactly the same. Great choice!

Yes, everything in taste is subjective, but I wonder about people who don’t like this one.

There are some obvious songs amid the “where did you get that from” tunes.
