Well, isn’t this a coincidence?! I’m home after a walk in the Mississippi River (and a stop at the Land Between the Lakes), and look at the song that shows up in this alphabetical list of my 100 favorite songs to have made the Hot 100 chart! Couldn’t have planned that! So let’s have another trip back to the big river, this time in song. Mississippi - John Phillips The Mamas and Papas were on here as a group (with “Creeque Alley”), and here’s Papa John all by himself. This song was so cool to me. The traditional country station in town wouldn’t touch it, but the “progressive” country station did. (I guess because of James Burton’s [“do it to me, James”] Dobro playing.) The rock stations played it, too, but the only way I knew I was listening to a rock station was if they played “Joy to the World” by Three Dog Night after this. No harmonies from the others, so this didn’t do much in the way of success. It’s mostly remembered by geeks like me who like a good bass solo (Joe Osborn, called out by Phillips before the solo). Mississippi Written by John Phillips Recorded by John Phillips From John Phillips (John, the Wolf King of L.A.), 1970 Peak chart position: #38 (also charted #58 country) Today’s country song: “Morning” Swamps all around make you feel kinda funny:

Great! Surprised that you knew it, as barely popular as it was.

After your plodge in the Mississippi, the song that came to my mind wasn’t that one. Back when I was a lad, Pussycat had a No.1 here in the UK with this Mississippi:

@FourWalls Pussycat were a Dutch group. Who would have guessed with a name like that? According to Wikipedia, they are not to be confused with The Pussycat Dolls, or The Pussycats. As if we would! I love everything Mississippi. I remember learning to spell it forwards and backwards as a kid. Apart from the songs, the episode of Friends, where Ross gets a spray tan, is etched into my memory. “Mississippilessly?”

Lots of songs with that name. When this came out I thought it was the Red Foley song. I enjoyed that Pussycat song!

I remember this song but the stations here didn't play it for long.

Peaking that low on the charts, most places probably played it a couple of times then dropped it.

Back in those days most of our stations played new songs at least twice, I remember hearing White Rabbit twice before it was banned.

I didn't realize that John ever sang solo. Have a good weekend. Glad you're home safe and sound.

Needless to say, Mama Cass got the attention, and for good reason.

I thought you’d appreciate the “holding onto a $100 bill” line, at least.

@FourWalls Sure. But it's not enough to get it onto a playlist. Maybe FOR $100. Then maybe. I could always hit the skip button if it comes on. lol
