Geocaching across the United States

I had plans to meet up tomorrow with a young gentlemen who is geocaching (via bike) across the country. He started in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania and has traveled north east across the entire state. He will reach the border of NY by Friday. He plans to continue onto NYC before heading back to school. That’s another 120 miles or more to go.
I was planning to meet up with him tomorrow as he will be reaching his geocaching goal in PA within 10 miles of me tomorrow. I was going to take him hot cocoa. I’m still sick though and my little one is running a fever as of yesterday so I had to cancel meeting up with him. I’m disappointed but don’t want to risk him catching a germ from us and it ruining his journey.
He sure is determined because it was such a blustery cold day I could not have bared being outside for more then the fews minutes I was today. His family must be so worried about him. He’s doing anywhere from 25-35 miles a day. I hope he succeeds in his reaching NYC!
I’m not sure when he will complete the rest of his across the country geocaching. I would have found that out had I met up with him as planned.

@AmbiePam it really is amazing to me. I’m not sure why he didn’t start it in warmer months though brr. Not easy to search for geocaches in the snow. The roads are probably more dangerous to be on too. I don’t know him personally but am worried about him.

@allknowing geocaching is like a modern day treasure hunt but what you find isn’t valueable it’s just for fun. You use an app to read about where the containers are hidden and it has coordinates you use to locate the location of them.

@allknowing nope anyone can hide and find them. I have hidden 126 geocaches for others to find and have found 1,781. I’ve been geocaching for 10 years now.

I'm sorry you and your baby are sick. I'm glad you decided not to meet up with the young man. He doesn't need to get sick while he's away from home. His classmates don't need him to bring anything back with him on his trip that they can catch, either.

@Daddyevil you are so right if he got sick he may take it back to school and spread it around there. I’d worry he would wind up to sick to continue his journey or try to push through and wind up passing out in the cold alone. He’s young I am worried about him and would have really liked to meet up with him just to even check up to make sure he didn’t need more than the hot cocoa he requested. He messaged me this morning to see if I was feeling better and could meet but I told
him unfortunately I am still sick and my little girl still running a fever too. I know 35 miles from here is a place waiting for him so he can warm up and take a shower etc. after that I’m not sure but I hope others step in to help him out.

@DaddyEvil it’s 20°F here right now but the wind gusts which are nearly constant are 33mph so it says on the weather app it feels like 5°F. I asked him to send me a photo when he finds the geocache.

@ekta54 I felt better today but not totally well. He went right past my house and when I messaged him saying I saw him he said he had to back track a few miles yo the awful steep hill I live on to go to the store as he was out of water. I told him to stay out and I scrubbed my hands up and made him some hot cocoa and grabbed water bottles. I stayed about 15 feet from him.

@snowy22315 it would be nice adventure but brrr way to cold for me as well. I did wind up meeting up meeting up with him for a brief period today.

@wolfgirl569 he made it to his goal cache in PA this morning. I wound up meeting up with him briefly this morning. He biked past my house and I mentioned I saw him. He was out of water and wanted hot cocoa so I made him that and dropped him off some water bottles. I got to chat with him a bit and wish him well and he was off to do another 40-60 mile bike ride to a place to sleep tonight.

@Judyev me too he has a long way to go. What would have taken me over 6 hours in a car he had completed now. Wonderful for him but he has so many more miles to go. I hope to be able to follow his journey on Facebook. I did get to meet him today after all

@andriaperry yes it would have. He will likely ask me again in the morning if I feel up to it but I doubt it. My little one isn’t running a fever tonight though but she was the past two nights.

@Lindaohio I don’t even like loading and unloading groceries in that kind of weather. He’s out in it for 8 or more hours a day on his bike. I hope he makes it to his final destination I sure think he’s determined.

Wow! What a time to attempt that and what an adventure too. Hopefully the weather is clear, and he can complete his mission. Challenging enough in warm weather.

@dgobucks226 I’m not sure how he will fair while bicycling through snow. Being from St. Louis Missouri I don’t think that would be something he would have experienced before.
