A special commemoration tonight

Thirty years ago, our niece had a baby boy. He was a very happy child but at the age of five, he was diagnosed with a brain tumour and died three years later. When he was first diagnosed, he had a younger sister followed by identical twin brothers a few years later. Four years ago, his grandmother died of cancer and they are interred side by side in a parkland cemetery where kangaroos come in to devour any floral tributes that may be left there. Tonight we’re all gathering to remember this little boy. But first we have a brass band concert to attend. Our niece will be playing there.

He was a really brave little boy. After one operation, he couldn't walk but eventually learnt again.

I can imagine even after 30 years this will be very painful for the parents

You have a niece who seems to be a senior just as I have one. She is my oldest sister's first child. We are very attached to each other.

How special to remember him, and how heartbreaking it had to have been, to lose him at such a young age. That's so special that you are all doing that together.

@JudyEv I know people like that. My own family was more open, I guess. We try hard to remember the good times we spent with those that went on before us. It's part of their legacy and part of our own history, it's good to renew the memories, at least it is for me.

@JudyEv I guess they didn't...at least, if they did, it was in a very quiet manner.

I know others here have lost children. We're not supposed to outlive our kids, are we?

The grandparents were very involved baby-sitting, etc when the child was so sick. It's nice to be invited to join them.

Such a young age. It's so hard to see children have cancer or other diseases. Sending my thoughts during this time.

Thank you. It's really when children are so young and so ill.

It is terrible that children have to suffer so much pain and even succumb to incurable diseases. Life is indeed a puzzle.

The twins were two when their brother was buried and thought the candles were to do with a birthday. We talked a lot about the situation and how brave the older brother was.

What a sweet gesture to gather to remember such a courageous little warrior. Darned cancer, it discriminates against no one, no age, nothing.

There are many children who get cancer. It seems particularly sad, somehow, for them.
