Most of you will know this song, thanks to a TV show. Some of you might faint realizing this is 70 years old now. How’s that for longevity? Gather ‘round the TV sets, buy some shoes, and give three cheers for Al Bundy!
Love and Marriage - Frank Sinatra
Yes, it’s the theme to Married…With Children. And, while I never watched the show, I’ve seen a lot of clips of Al Buddy’s craziness in the shoe store. He seems like an 80s/90s tamed-down version of Archie Bunker.
And of course we have the Chairman of the Board here to deliver the song. It was so popular that even Homer and Jethro did a parody of it (“it’s as useless as a horseless carriage”), which was quite unusual for them to venture out of country music then.
It’s survived for 70 years for being a good song…and a good theme song.
Love and Marriage
Written by Sammy Cahn and Jimmy Van Heusen
Recorded by Frank Sinatra
From This Is Sinatra!, 1955

Oh, yeah, you can’t visit Jersey without knowing a Sinatra song or two.
Fortunately, one of his songs (“Summer Wind”) is on my 100 favorites list.

@lilacskies — there are a lot of songs that I like more by other people. I much prefer his “My Way,” of course, but I don’t like “By the Time I Get to Phoenix” (by anybody, so don’t take it personally, Frank) or “I Can’t Stop Loving You” (blame that on my growing up with country music and Don Gibson’s original). Someone posted Marion McPartland playing “The Lady is a Tramp” in one of my music groups, and I automatically heard Sinatra.

One of my sons used to watch the Married...With Children show years ago. I didn't like it or enjoy it, but he did. I had an elderly aunt who forbid anyone to watch it if they were in her home, she thought it was disgusting. But I do remember the song, for sure.

My parents wouldn’t let me watch All in the Family when I was a teenager. Funny how MWC seems tame in comparison.
Glad you know the song.

@MarieCoyle — “controversial,” maybe. I didn’t watch it when I was a kid, and when I was older I didn’t care for it that much.

No one ever monitored our television show watching, but to be truthful, we didn't watch a lot of TV as kids. Saturday mornings were important. I always watched Ed Sullivan with my grandparents, and I had to sit with Grandma and help her mend and quilt during Lawrence Welk (yes, a classic show, but as a kid, not my favorite!) All in the Family was considered very risque for those times, wasn't it?

My Dad and my stepmom both loved Frank Sinatra. I recall him secretly planning to take her to hear him sing, and he surprised her with the tickets. She was so, so excited!

She talked about it for weeks. I was so, so glad they got to go, he made it a special weekend for her and they were both so happy.

There are a lot of people who impersonate him, directly or indirectly.
As a grumpy old woman, I approve of TV shows with grumpy middle-aged people!

Married With Children was a great show. Al Bundy was some man.
And some gorgeous women to watch. Loved it!
Oh yeah, Frank Sinatra. I’ve got albums of his in vinyl, cassette tape, and on cd. He was really before my time, but seemed to span generations. Definitely the Guv’nor.

He’s definitely a musical genius for the ages, much like Elvis and the Beatles and maybe even Elton John.

They mark it on your drivers license in NJ if you don’t know a Sinatra song, don’t they. Like “real ID.”
