Yes, we all know this wasn’t actually recorded in 1960. However, it was released in 1960, so that qualifies it for this countdown of songs that are celebrating their 65th birthday this year. Hey, just like me! Wonder if these songs had to sign up for Medicare.
Here’s today’s song.
True Love Ways - Buddy Holly
Wow, what an absolutely gorgeous love song. It was a total 180 from the upbeat songs that Buddy Holly had made a career out of in his all-too-short life. I guess it wasn’t meant to be that we’d see this side of Holly during his lifetime.
Holly recorded this, as is, in October 1958. The song was inspired by Holly’s love for his wife. You don’t normally see songs this deep out of 22-year-olds.
While Holly’s version was released in 1960, it didn’t make the US charts. Peter and Gordon covered it in 1965 (so this could have been on BOTH countdowns this month!
), making it a top 20 hit.
Beautiful songs like this show why people mourn Buddy Holly 66 years after his death…because we think of what could have been.

A really beautiful song, not like most of Holly’s hits.

Yup. And I told you that my husband's friends said he looked like Buddy back in the day.

I hope they meant Buddy Holly and not Buddy Hackett.

I know. Maybe 52 year old “boys” should feel ashamed, too.

I love Buddy, but not feeling this one for some reason. I will say its different from his normal music, but all musicians make songs we personally do not like. I personally just think I like when he rocks the house down, not make me cry. . I am still the only one who will play these old classics at the bar. People get so confused. Its funny, Know your roots or shut up.

Amazing short-lived career. His music lives on and he will never be forgotten. You just wonder how famous he would have been, had he lived.

Music definitely would have been a lot different without his void.

That happened with a lot of songs….”what’s the name of that song again?”

I know. So many cases of “oh, if only…” in rock and roll.
