Onward we trudge through the great songs that are now sixty years old. Sometimes you think these songs are quite dated (I’ll admit that quite a few of these songs sound VERY 1965-ish), and other times you think, “REALLY, that song’s 60 years old????” I guess that’s true of any era of music that had a definitive “sound.” Here’s a song that is pretty mid-60s sounding, but also timeless.
What the World Needs Now - Jackie DeShannon
Yesterday @rebelann wrote a discussion about the “old songs” fitting modern times. In her case, she used a Survivor song from the early 90s. (Yeah, these countdowns are celebrating my 65th birthday, but sheesh that makes me feel old.
) Here we are, 60 years old thinking this very same thing: what the world needs now is love.
DeShannon’s other major hit of the 60s was similarly themed, “Put a Little Love in Your Heart.” Burt Bacharach, the legendary composer whose fingerprints are all over the Great American Songbook, didn’t write the latter one, but he did write this. DeShannon co-wrote her other most memorable song.
Oh, and she also wrote another song that’s legendary: “Bette Davis Eyes,” the Kim Carnes hit.

I agree with what someone else said, she did sound like she was almost impersonating Dionne Warwick with this one.

Another classic. Who cares if they sound 60ish? That's what we love about these songs.

You're right, songs like this one is never outdated. Too bad there are too many people who simply want to rule the world and make everyone do their bidding, that probably will never change but maybe most people can try not to give them that power.
Thanks for the shout out

Never liked this one always seemed kind of lame to me but could be a theme song for the times we are going through

I don’t think it’ll make the Bacharach top ten (or top 50 for that matter), but the sentiment desperately needs to be expressed today.
