Dismantling a house

On the fridge at our house-sit there is hand-written list of ‘jobs to be done’. It isn’t meant for us but for their four teenage sons. On the list is ‘dismantle the cubby house’ so we might take this on board for ourselves. In the photo you can see the cubby house. It’s a bit the worse for wear but I’m not sure how easy it will be to dismantle. We had to go to our old home the other day so we picked up some tools that we might need. I’ve attached a ‘before’ photo. Hopefully the ‘after’ photo in a few weeks will show a nice clean area.

Why is it called a "cubby house"? Here, that would be called a play house. When Pretty and I moved into this house there was a treehouse that was falling apart in a tree in the back yard. The neighbor's grandkids would climb up to it once in a while. I kept thinking I should tear it down but didn't. One day I was in the back yard and noticed the treehouse was gone, along with the "ladder" that had been nailed to the tree. I don't know who demolished it but I was glad it was gone.

It seems 'cubby' is an Australian term. I don't know how it came about. Tree-houses are popular too but many end up looking pretty dilapidated.

@JudyEv It doesn't take long before time and weather make such shelters look old and well-used.

@DaddyEvil Kids grow up so fast and grow out of play/cubby houses.

That's a very nice play house. When we were young, we used to make play house out of light materials. I hope you could finish the project soon. Happy weekend!

Kids make play houses under tables or anywhere that suits. In Australia, cubbies were often made under tanks stands as many houses had rain-water tanks on stands.

I'm sure that little house was popular back in the day with their kids! It looks like it is still in fairly good shape and would make a nice little clubhouse/playhouse for kids! I'm assuming that is what it is used for, just another name for it in cubby house!

@JudyEv Maybe they can use it for a storage shed. Garden equipment or something else?

Yes, you're right. I don't think it's condition is quite good enough to sell it on for someone else to enjoy although it is still quite sturdy.

@kareng Someone else suggested a potting shed which is a good idea.

They should leave it there and lower it to the ground for use as a shed.

That would be one use for it although they do have a shed out the back.

That was a pretty play house, I understand it serves no purpose anymore. I do not believe it's a very hard job to dismantle it.

It's still quite solid and Julia's idea of a potting shed sounds a good one.

I thought maybe an adult couldn't stand up in it but it looks high enough.

How nice of you to do this, as you really do not have to. On the other hand it is nice to keep busy.

Our niece is lovely and so good with her four boys. It's nice to be able to help a bit and, as you say, it's good to keep busy.

Why dismantle it? They could rent it out as auxiliary housing

@BarBaraPrz It's the same here. We have a lot of homeless people now. Some have jobs but they're living in their cars or in tents. Rents are really high and there are not enough of them. It's very sad.

It looks a challenge and good that you have taken it upon yourself to do the hard work. Your hands on experience should come in handy.

I guess it does, except it isn't in a tree! Tree-houses here would be built in a tree. In other countries, it's probably called a play-house.

I wonder if it would survive being taken down and tightened up and used as a potting shed in the garden? It is so nice to repurpose things.

I thought it would be easy but it's a bit more solid than I bargained on. We might have to give up on the idea.

Yes, a play house. Mostly called cubbies here although I've no idea why. It would make a great cat cabin but these cats never go outside. Perhaps they could be confined to it.
