They Saw Mud, I Saw THIS

Ha. And you wonder why I get out of town for the Derby? Fun fact: according to one of our local meteorologists, who has this segment called “Hokey Weather Facts” (his last name is Hoke so it fits), 53% of the Kentucky Derby Days have had rain. I didn’t read the entire thing, so I don’t know if that included the sleet and snow we had the year I bought my house (1989). Meanwhile, while people at the track saw mud, I saw this. That’s the view at a red light in Virginia on the way home. Who had the better view??? Hopefully next year my Derby getaway won’t be interrupted by family surgery, a death in the family, and my own doctor appointments. It wasn’t much of a trip in terms of places gone and seen, but the scenery was amazing! Thank y’all for coming along!

You can find beautiful scenery everywhere in the US... The problem is getting people to slow down and look at the beauty. Most are too busy and don't think about what they're seeing. I was happy to ride along, thank you.

I was all backroads until I got to Lexington, so I had nothing but beauty to look at. You’re so correct that people don’t smell the flowers.

@DaddyEvil — WHAT?! A man stopped and asked for directions???! I’d do that with my mom. We’d have lunch then go for a drive.

@FourWalls Pretty and I used to take road trips all the time. We'd leave our city and then she'd tell me where to turn and we'd drive until I got lost... Sometimes we'd stop and pick flowers along a country road or we'd cross a creek and she'd want to stop and look at rocks... We were just out talking, admiring the scenery and enjoying each others' company. (I hate feeling like I'm lost. But it made her happy when she could get us so far into the back country that I didn't recognize any landmarks... After a while of me being lost, I'd have to stop and ask directions back to a highway I recognized and then we'd go home.)

America is always a place of scenery, why people fought so hard I suppose. That being said. Sorry you trip was met with such sadness.

Thanks. It happens. Additionally, I didn’t want to be too far from home in case my brother or sister in law needed me.

I totally agree with you. I was amazed at the beauty in the mountains on the way home, and I had never been that way before so it was all new to me!

Lucky girl, you have been so lucky. I understand very well why you get out of town for the Derby. We always left during 15 days for the Formula 1 Grand Prix when we lived in Monte Carlo.

About 100 miles up the road from us is Indianapolis, and I’m sure the people who live near the speedway will leave for the Indianapolis 500.

@FourWalls In Monte Carlo the race was through the streets of the city, it was a nightmare during 4 days. We usually came to the United States for two weeks.

And if you’re going to have to endure a heavy downpour, I prefer the way I did it: in the back of my car, stretched out on an exercise mat, taking a nap, and not getting soaked to the bone.

That's certainly better than looking at mud although I wouldn't mind seeing the horses.

We have lots of horse farms around where you can see the horses in much nicer settings. Including one where a lot of Derby winners are retired to!

@FourWalls That's good they have a retirement farm for them. We have one in the east for past winners of the Melbourne Cup.
