Can you believe this is fifty years old?! One of the wild and wonderful things about music is that some songs can sound so dated, and others are still fresh decades later. I think this falls into the latter category. Back to 1975 for today’s song. Mamma Mia - Abba DANG, Björn, what’s with the Kiss platform boots??? Abba-mania was prevalent in the mid-70s. They were massive successes everywhere…except the U.S. Oh, they had success here, but nowhere near the popularity they had in Europe. Here, they were competing with all this other stuff that you’ll see this month. Of course, to me, that’s what made 1975 such a special year. All of this was brand new to me (if you haven’t been reading all month, 1975 was the year I stopped listening exclusively to country music). And that was AM radio in the mid-70s, where BTO and Alice Cooper were at home with “Sunshine on My Shoulder.” There are a lot of songs from 1975 that I don’t ever want to hear again (KC & the Sunshine Band, for instance ). But this song still sounds good. Mamma Mia Written by Benny Andersson, Björn Ulvaeus and Stig Anderson Recorded by Abba From ABBA, 1975 Just one look and I forget everything:

I never saw the movie or play, although I guess I could watch it during my free trial month of Amazon Prime.

ABBA were VERY big here in the UK in the 70’s and 80’s. It all started when they won The Eurovision Song Contest here in Brighton in 1974 with “Waterloo”. These days, the ‘youngsters’ only associate Mamma Mia with the movie, but I was there, back in 1975, ogling Agnetha in admiration, thinking, “Lucky Björn”.

She’s not the dream she was in the 70s but she has aged well. Björn, on the other hand…..(and I thought he was so cute back then!)

I think ABBA's music is like time travel, nostalgic yet timeless! Do you have a favorite song by them? What cultural impact do you think the band has had and continues to have on society?

I did an Abba countdown a few years ago, and I picked “Waterloo” to top the list.

Abba had some magical tunes - dozens and dozens of them it seems.
