A hummingbird lives between 3 and 6 years. There are a variety of reasons why their lives may be cut short, such as predators, injuries, starvation, illness, and exposure to harsh weather. Even cats, snakes, hawks, and other aggressive birds. Sometimes they fly long distances without any source of calories. They can get hypoglycemic and will just perch and die. Or fall to the ground. Some experts say that cats are the hummingbird's number one predator in the U.S. In the question of nectar for the bird's feeder, substances such as corn syrup, soda, molasses, honey, and artificial sweeteners can be toxic for the hummingbird. Regular cane sugar is best to use. The nectar in the feeder should be changed once a week in cool weather and twice in warmer temperatures. If not, it can become contaminated with bacteria, mold, or microorganisms and become a health risk. The male hummingbird can have multiple mates. The female is solely responsible for building the nest, incubating eggs, and raising the young. A male may chase a female away from a feeder because he is defending his territory. They are territorial and will stake out a specific feeding area.

Thanks for sharing these interesting information about this beautiful bird. I had read about it a few years ago. I came to know it can fly backwards also.

@celticeagle They're just like babies... You aren't supposed to feed them honey, either.

I am grateful that a hummingbird visited a flower right outside my front porch window this year.

Now I learn more about hummingbirds, thank you! They are really tiny and perhaps it is easier for them to get attacked by other animals.
