Owning a vehicle

It is fine owning a vehicle when there is no other mode of transport But how happy is one driving on roads where there is always a bumper to bumper traffic congestion A bumper to bumper congestion is more a rule than an exception in most countries India included. Fortunately one can always hire taxis and autos who could be regularly providing that service in India which is cheaper and hassle free What is your view on this?. Owning a vehicle is a necessity where I live. There are no taxis or buses in my part of the US unless I want to hire a taxi to come 50 miles/80 km to come pick me up and then pay them to take me somewhere and back again. That would be too expensive. I've only driven in bumper-to-bumper traffic four or five times in my life and I knew it was a possibility before we left home. Branson, Missouri is a tourist destination about an hour drive from our house but Pretty and I wanted to go see some of the shows in Branson and then stayed the night (I made reservations for both several months in advance) before going to an amusement park on the outskirts of that city. (We had season passes to the amusement park.) The amusement park was fun and we enjoyed it enough to make the drive once or twice a month to play and eat there during our summers.

Your need to trave may not be on a daily basis but there are loads who do that and I can well imagine what they go through specially when they cannot choose timings.

@allknowing I feel sorry for people here who don't own a vehicle... When our car broke down last year, it took us months to save up enough money to get it fixed... People without a vehicle have to walk or beg friends or relatives to take them places they needed to be. My brother said he didn't mind but, when he thought enough time had passed for us to have the money to fix our car, he told us he didn't want to take us places anymore. That was fine since our insurance would pay for a medical taxi to take us back and forth to doctor appointments but for anything else, we had to walk... When I can't see well enough to drive now, I don't know if my brother would take us or not. We might have to wait until I can see...

@DaddyEvil Reading your post I wonder why Indians who have migrated cannot find the difference. Here even if one does not own a vehicle our public transport system is brilliant.

We need a car where we live, there are no taxis and the bus is only every 30 minutes and it does not serve all the places where we need to go. We go out when we know that the roads are not crowded, that means to avoid 7 to 9 in the morning and 5 to 7 in the evening.

@allknowing - Where we live is a very small town (1,000 citizens), in the largest cities there are regular buses and tramways every 5 minutes. In Milan we never used the car, I used the tramways and the subway and often I walked.

Traffic can be very busy here but it's probably not as chaotic as India.

No matter the sometimes frustrating aspects of owning a vehicle, I would never, in a million years, give up the freedom one offers me. For any reason, under any circumstances.
