Interesting perspective, dedicated to a hobby

In the 70's and early 80's our little town used to have a motorcycle "Grand Prix' Labor Day weekend, I am told. People have said it was a bit rowdy and not family friendly exactly back in the day.
Labor Day is still our main community holiday with a parade or two and an 1880's baseball game, etc.
In 2023 the Bent Rims Florence Grand Prix was reinstated, but moved to Memorial Day. The participants began arriving today for the third year of the new race. They come with motorcycles in trailers and riding in trucks pulling campers. They come with kids and dogs and wives and girlfriends. New motor bikes and vintage. Also fat tired old fashioned two wheel bicycles So far it has been very family friendly. The few local businesses garner some extra cash and traffic. People have fun and come in from all over. Bob talked with a guy that drove from Colorado.
For those that do not know, Colorado is west of Kansas. Florence is in the north central part of eastern Kansas. That is a way to go for a hobby. The city rents out camping places in the former football field--directly across the street from me. One camper has proudly raised his state of Texas flag. Texas is two states away. Also a ways to go.
What does this mean in our town? We have a few little historic things in town, we have a few vendors come in with food and crafts, etc. Local eateries get some walk ins.
Our population is about 390.
400 motorcycles are registered to ride the ten mile track, going around ten times for a one hundred mile course.
Bob and I do lots of people watching.
And when it gets dark, the lights go down, our camping neighbors visit quietly. Bruno wants to watch but will stay close to the front porch.
I know, this is not exactly what Memorial Day was for originally, but it has long since turned into the summer kick-off. Ready for summer fun. Some participants visit the local churches on Sunday. Our city seems to welcome them. I think it is a nice way to celebrate the long weekend.

It is. Our little town has struggled for years. This helps with revenue and with keeping spirits up as well.

@GardenGerty The small towns here are all trying to find some activities/gimmicks to attract tourists and help with revenue. And you're right, such things do help with keeping spirits up too.

That´s a tiny amount of people. I live alone in a city that has millions.

I have never lived in that large a city, except when I lived outside of San Diego. You can be lonely in a large or small town.

It sounds like a fun time in your area for this event. I hope everyone is safe and there is no mishaps.

As long as they keep it family friendly, I don't see a problem with it. I hope you all enjoy the long weekend and your town enjoys the extra capital brought in by the holiday weekend.
All the fun activities would be washed out if that type of thing was tried here... But, I can enjoy the weekend with you describing the interesting things and people you have there.
The Weather Channel shows nothing but rain/storms for the entire holiday weekend this year. Pretty and I won't go to the cemetery this year. Normally, my family meets there over the weekend to visit the graves of our parents/grandparents as well as brothers and sisters. We gather in the church built on our property, bring bouquets for the graves and have quiet conversations and a meal.

I am sorry your family gathering is washed out this year. We do have rain and thunderstorms. There is an alternative location if the street dance gets rained out and part of the point of the races is to get muddy, so the wetness works.

@GardenGerty We only hear from my brother and he's not interested in family gatherings anymore. Pretty and I stopped going to anything family related around 10 years ago. She's never been interested. I used to go so I could see my two favorite nieces. *shrug*
I'm glad things will still work out there.

I didn't realize that you lived in such a small town That's good tourism as long as the cyclists behave themselves.

Yes, it is. Florence is very small, but we are a half hour to an hour from bigger cities.

@GardenGerty We are about 40 minutes from Cleveland. Our township has less than 5,000 people.
