Now that's what I call a truck!

On our two days away with the motor-home, we were heading into mining country and went past some very big earthworks. On many of our country roads, there are truck bays at intervals. I don’t know what they’re called in your country, maybe pull-ins? Some have picnic tables; maybe rubbish bins but many are just a safe place to park off the highway. At one point, we’d parked in a bay to have lunch when a big road-train pulled in beside us, then another. When we poked our heads out, the truck bay was full of vehicles and there were road-trains lined up along the road with flashing lights on the road itself. It turned out that three huge mining trucks were being transported south. You can see in the photo, which is taken from behind the vehicles, the size of the tyres compared to the truck tyres. There were escort vehicles front and back as well as a police escort. Once the three wide loads had passed the road trains all dispersed one by one and we were back to a peaceful little truck bay.

@judyev We call them lay-bys.

Okay, that makes sense. I know when we were touring Scotland there were lay-bys of sorts on all the one-lane roads. They weren't meant as rest points though.

That is big and certainly would be hard to get around. We have rest areas in my county and along the ocean coastline from Southern to Northern California.

@JudyEv Sad that people use them that way. I like to leave places the same way or better after using them.

They are well-patronised here but some people use them as a rubbish dump which is sad.

@Fishmomma Some people have no idea about doing the right thing. You have to wonder what their homes are like.

Talk about oversize loads, Holy smoly, that's a monster truck. I have never seen anything that huge outside of construction parts for whatever they're building but the trucks used to transport them are 18 wheelers or semi trucks.

These would only be seen, normally, on a minesite. They are certainly huge. Imagine having a puncture in one of those.

It doesn't seem there are any terms for truck bays..not here I mean truck pull ins. There really aren't any except for emergency ramps.

In my part of the US, those are called shoulders or turnouts here. They're safe places for trucks or other larger vehicles to pull over and let regular vehicles pass safely. Sometimes we see Semi trucks and trailers pulled over in those so the drivers can take a nap without blocking the roads. When Pretty and I traveled a lot, I'd pull over in those when I needed to stop and stretch my legs.

@JudyEv I'm not surprised. They're for the exact same purpose.

We have rest areas where the trucks can pull in. There are restrooms, vending machines, etc.

Ours in the country areas aren't that fancy. A basic toilet would be all you could expect.

@JudyEv The Rest Areas are also for non-commercial drivers. They are usually pretty nice.

I like that sign on the van behind it: Oversize. Oversized?! That's saying it mildly. Reminds me of some of the vehicles seen in the movie Avatar.

They are monsters. I think some are driven remotely but I'm not sure of that.

Wow, that’s big. Our oversized trucks have to be escorted by the escort vehicles but rarely by police cars. We have roadside parking that can have a sign with anything from “picnic table” to “roadside parking.” Depends on where it’s at, and who’s maintaining it (federal, state, county, etc.).

It's only the biggest of the big that have to have a police escort. It's good that they moved three of these in a convoy rather than a week apart or whatever.

They are extra lanes here where you can pull over and take a break.

They come in very handy sometimes if you want to change drivers or catch a 5-minute nap.

It's massive, isn't it? No wonder they were stopping oncoming traffic.
