Cal Was Not Always Cal

If anyone was not aware, our cat Cal was originally our warehouse cat where I worked. For whatever reason, he always gravitated to me, and thus, he's now our cat since I retired. But even when I was still working, Cal came home with me on Wednesdays and weekends, and because he was always meowing and looking for me when I did my business travel, he came home with me and spent time with my wife during those times. But that's not what I am here to talk about. It's his name and how we came to be known as Cal. When we originally picked Cal up from the farm where we got him, his name was Debra. Of course, all of us in the office agreed Debra was a silly name for a cat, and so we renamed Debra, Callie. Not sure how we came up with that, but it was certainly better than Debra. Of course, as you can imagine, both Debra and Callie are girl's names. So far as we knew, Cal was a girl. Until one day Callie had some blood in her stool, and so we took her to the vet to have her checked out. The vet called us and said, "Callie's fine. Just a little case of the worms," and she prescribed us a medication to give her to clear that up. "One other thing," she added, "Callie has balls." And so, as this new revelation occurred to us, Callie was no longer an appropriate name for a boy cat, and we shortened the name to Cal. And there you have it. BTW, as I was playing with AI the other day I had it cartoonize a picture of Grayson, but also had it do one for Cal as well, and this is what it came up with.

I thought you mistyped Cal when you said you were playing with Ai, because I read it as AL. I'm tired and have a headache, that's my excuse, and I'm sticking to it.

That's a cute pic. No one knew that Callie had balls? Hmmmm.

He was a kitten and they hadn't dropped yet. Granted, the case was the same with Grayson, but we always knew he was a boy. lol

@porwest I took a cat to the vet once to have all his junk removed only to be told he was a lady, and she was pregnant.

That's very cute. We knew people who took their female cat to be spayed only to be told it was a male and had already been neutered. And they'd driven 300 miles each way to the vet.

Ugh. That's a revelation more serious than the one we had with Cal. lol

How did no one know Cal was a boy? Is the only way to know the gender by looking down there? Guess no one bothered to do that lol. Was Grayson always boy?

@porwest Haha. Gotcha. But is there any other way to tell if it’s a boy or a girl without looking down there? Like with babies we can usually tell if it’s a boy or a girl just by looking at the face.

@lovebuglena Well, human babies make things a bit more...obvious. I try to keep my business out of the business of animals. lol

He was a kitten and his you-know-what's hadn't dropped yet. We had no idea. lol But yes, Grayson was always a boy.

I don't recall ever having a cat. Is it difficult to tell which gender they are?

After a while, yeah, you can tell. Sometimes it's harder when they are kittens because certain things haven't dropped yet—I am sure an expert would know right away. But I am not an expert and apparently neither were any of us in the office. lol

It's funny how Cal wound up being Cal. When my kids were younger we had a boy cat named Jack. Turns out Jack was a girl but we didn't change her name and she was Jack forever.
