Making assumptions is so, so easy

The photo is of a salt lake where we camped one night.
Some time back I knew there was something I wanted to write about but the subject had slipped my mind. It came back to me today.
While we were at a bush poetry weekend a month or so ago, we got talking to a guy who is in a sea shanty choir whose music we really enjoy. He has a powerful voice and is a great story-teller so we enjoyed the chance to chat with him and to get to know him a bit more.
We mentioned someone and he said ‘Oh, I married his daughter’ but then he had trouble remembering her name. I was astonished, thinking it must have been years and years ago if he couldn’t remember the name of his wife. However, it turned out he was/is a marriage celebrant. Isn’t it easy to assume things?

What is a marriage celebrant?
Sometimes it's better to forget someone we married than to keep thinking about them and cursing their name.

That's funny. Yes we do assume things.

That is a funny story. But the way he said it I would think the same as you did.

I bet he likes to mislead people that way and does it on purpose.

I couldn't believe my ears at first! Perhaps he does do it on purpose. He was the sort of guy who would do that.

That's pretty funny and yes it's easy to assume things. Love your post
I figured it was going to be a "small world' kind of story and that he married someone you knew but the ending was even better than what I had assumed

I couldn't believe he would forget the name of a former wife!!
I still laugh when I think about it.

@GardenGerty I figured that's probably what it meant.

We sometimes make assumptions without even knowing it.

We will be going to listen to his sea shanty group in a week or two. He has a very rich, deep voice.

They should change the way it is said when it comes to a marriage celebrant marrying someone

Oh okay, another assumption on my part. The celebrants can perform wedding ceremonies but are not affiliated to any particular religion.

I keep getting caught on myLot thinking people will know what I'm talking about but sometimes they don't.
