Happy Dermatologist day!! Yes, it’s time for the peek at my moles and stuff. I ditched the “civilian” doctor because you either got the first appointment at 7:45AM or you were there all day. So before I head to the VA I’ll give you another peek at the moon! Here’s today’s song. Blue Moon - The Marcels I miss doo-wop. This is one of the reasons that it was so great. This song dates to 1934, and was a pop standard for decades. I mean, Rodgers and Hart wrote it!!! It was in a play, a movie, and the repertoire of people like Mel Tormé, Frank Sinatra, Jo Stafford, Billie Holiday, Dean Martin, and a million others. And I can’t stand any of them, because I’m so used to the doo-wop version. That’s a weird thing, isn’t it. There are songs that I’ve heard slow AND fast versions of and I like them both. This one, however, is doo-wop or die. Enjoy this; and, if you’re the opposite and appreciate the pop ballad version, there are tons of them to choose from. Blue Moon Written by Richard Rodgers and Lorenz Hart Recorded by The Marcels From Blue Moon, 1961 Without a dream in my heart:

A song that can only live in its time. But, I can't say I don't like it. Great for its time and I think...timeless.

These days it would be sampled in a dance or hip hop song. So it was in a great time.

I love doo-wap. Gimme more! I couldn’t have named this group, but I do remember the British band Mud doing a cover in the 70’s, and then a few years later - Showaddywaddy doing their version. They also had another “Moon” hit I remember, but I won’t ruin your countdown by revealing it here. If it doesn’t appear, then I’ll mention it later (if I remember!)

It’s amazing what they did with songs in that era. The Showaddywaddy song didn’t make it. An interesting side note is that Tommy Boyce (co-writer of many Monkees hits) co-wrote “Under the Moon of Love.”

Sorry, howling's only allowed on full moons...and one of the forthcoming songs.

This is a great version and seems to be one I'm most familiar with.

I’ve heard “standard” versions of other songs that got a doo-wop treatment, but this version just ruined the “standard” version for me.
