A Song Dedicated to Elvis

I simply love a song which I had listened to many time called “Black Velvet”. I had no idea that this song was all about Elvis. Then one day I was searching for words to describe the night sky and coming to black velvet I saw an article that said the song was singing about Elvis. The song has become one of the greatest songs of all time dedicated to the King of Rock and Roll. This song was written by Christopher Ward and Davis Tyson two Canadian songwriters. Originally it was recorded by Alannah Myles. In 1990 it shot up to number one on the Billboard Hot 100 charts and stayed there for a solid two weeks. As a result of which Myles received that 1990 Grammy for Best Female Rock Vocalist for”Black Velvet”. This song has gone on to receive a ”Millionaire Award” from ASCAP in 2005 having had over four million radio plays. I bet I got you curious about this song now. One of the writers Christopher Ward got the inspiration seeing fans of Elvis on a bus heading for Memphis to attend the 10th anniversary vigil at Graceland. ”Black Velvet” became a commemorative story about Elvis Presley. At the start of the song there is mention of Elvis as a baby –”Mama’s dancing with baby on her shoulder” and goes on into the height of his career –”Mama’s baby is in the heart of every schoolgirl, Love Me Tender leave ‘em crying in the aisles” and then winds on down to when Elvis died –”In a flash he was gone. It happened so soon. What could you do?’ Take a listen it is a song it touches the heart:

@AmbiePam I have listened and enjoyed this song but now I will always think of Elvis when I hear it. Funny at times when I have listened to this song there are parts that made me think of my Martin and now I find it was about Elvis I wonder if they have bumped into each other? Perhaps my thoughts have carried because once I did have a paranormal connection with Elvis,

I am not aware of this song. Thanks for sharing. Elvis and Michael were gone too soon. They had so much talent to share with the world.

@Jenaisle I am sure that Elvis would still be delighting many with his concerts. I wish he had had a talent for songwriting too

Yes, "Jimmie Rodgers on the victrola up high." Have you ever been to Elvis' birthplace in Tupelo? I got to go there last year, and I'm so glad I did!

@FourWalls I have never had the pleasure but I remember you writing about it, For one with my sixth sense I would love to visit Graceland and have the pleasure of meeting Elvis in the Jungle Room, One fan actually felt and saw his presence a bit and then got scared and ran but I would sit down and talk to the King
