Of Course I Took the Scenic Route!

After all of that wading through history in New Harmony, Indiana and Camp Breckenridge, Kentucky, I started for home. As with last week, there were concerns about severe weather and possible heavy rain (which came to fruition: Evansville, Indiana, where I spent Tuesday night, had significant flash flooding Friday!
).
And, of course, I took the scenic route. After last week’s exploration of Red River Gorge there was no way I’d pass up a little more beauty, especially since it was on the way home!
The photos are a part of the Land Between the Lakes that I’d never been to before, the Elk and Bison Prairie. It’s a paid ($5) drive around an area with wildlife, most significantly, elk and bison. On the left is looking down into the prairie from the first pull-off after entering. The right shows our favorite whiskey, wild turkey.
(Yes, Wild Turkey is distilled in Kentucky, but in central Kentucky.)
I did see a couple of bison, but they were in no mood to stop and pose for a photo. They kept trudging through the woods near the road. There were no elk visible while I was there.
They don’t have any of those funny-but-gets-the-message “please don’t pet our fluffy cows” signs.
There are a few warning signs along the path, advising you to not be too far away from your car while you’re out reading historical markers or taking pictures.
It was a very enjoyable drive through the prairie, with the bonus sightings of turkey and bison!
PHOTOS:
(Left) the prairie
(Right) Wild turkey!! (There were a total of six in this group, but they were spread out.)

I’d never get home if I stopped and took pictures of all the scenery, so I just hit the highlights.

How close did you get to the Bison?
I've never seen a real Bison in real life
Do people hunt the Wild Turkeys to eat them like on Thanksgiving?
We don't have Bison or Wild Turkeys here.

Here's my discussion from 2021. You can see how close I was to the bison then!
…That these weren’t the “Badlands” Bruce Springsteen was singing about! [em]rofl[/em] For only the second time in my life I’m in the Mountain Time Zone. The...

Thanks for going getting that link for me.

They were toodling down the road in Teddy Roosevelt NP, and I was as far over on the other side of the road as I could get. It’s their home, not mine.

I love seeing turkey and bison. Saw bison at Big Bone Lick State Park. They were on the other side of a very flimsy fence! Saw a whole bunch of turkey hens in Erie. They surrounded the car. Wish I had my camera at that time.

I didn’t see any bison when I was at Big Bone Lick. I need to go back.

@FourWalls It was cool. I told my hubby that they came just for me because when the next batch of tourists came, they left. It was just the two of us when they were there.

I love the scenic route when on road trips. So many things are missed when a person takes a plane ride or all interstate highways. Your trips are truly wonderful to follow along with!

As I said to @deepizzaguy if I stopped everywhere there was scenery I'd never get anywhere!
Truly the backroads are the best roads.

I love taking the federal highways (US route) instead of the interstates. That trip along Route 66 last year was amazing to me.

They're the best. I'm not saying that there's no beauty along the interstate, but those back roads are amazing!
