Her Car Got Towed And She's Blaming Everybody But Herself

This is a post tinged with a mixture of frustration and empathy for my 82 year old mother-in-law. She's always been negative, played the victim, lied, etc. So I haven't particularly liked her. But now she genuinely has some type of senility affecting her and making her vulnerable. She had two knee replacements a few years ago and has a handicapped parking placard for her car. There's a handicapped parking spot near her apartment which she claims is "hers" and almost got in a fight with somebody once who parked there who had a legitimate handicapped parking sticker telling them this has HER space. Anyway, she parked in the handicapped spot at her apartment complex recently and when she woke up the next morning her car was gone. She thought it had been stolen. Eventually it was sorted out that it had been towed because her handicapped parking sticker wasn't displayed on her rearview mirror as required by law. She says she puts it on her dashboard and when she closed the car door the wind must have knocked it on the floorboard. We tried, to no avail, to explain to her that the dashboard wasn't the proper place to put the placard. She wants to punch the tow tuck driver who "knows that's my car and I'm allowed to park there." We tried, again to no avail, to explain that the tow truck service probably has multiple drivers and not all of them would know her car is there every night or had seen the handicapped placard before. She just told us this story last night. It happened two months ago. The other son came to her rescue and got the car out of the tow lot. We don't know why the other son didn't tell us about the incident. Have you ever had your car towed? What happened?

I have never had my car towed. I do have a handicap placard (I gave in and got one two years ago). It never moves from my rear view mirror. But I’m not elderly and the most stubborn person that side of the Mississippi.

Amber, it is illegal in most states to keep your handicapped placard hanging from your rear view mirror when you are driving. Here, you will get a ticket for it if it's noticed. I think most states if not all have the same law on this.

@AmbiePam I looked and yes, it’s illegal in Oklahoma as well as other states. Supposedly it can block the driver from seeing things? Or so it said.

No, I have never been towed, except for a roadside breakdown. With her senility should she be driving?

She probably should not be driving or living alone or making decisions at this point. It has really progressed in the last two years.

The safe way would be to get the handicap license plate

That is one tough situation. She’s always been difficult, but now her memory and thinking are clearly slipping, which makes it harder.

we have never had a car towed away. Strange that her other son did not mention the incident. I understand she has parked there for so long that she considers the space hers ...when, in fact, it is not. Some folks, particularly the elderly are like that.

Yeah, one time when I parked in the fire lane to make a quickie trip into the bank..unfortunately, there was a line, and you know the rest.

I had to tow my car in the winter when my water pump failed and my car overheated

Been lucky with my cars and not had towed or ticketed. Have a bit of sympathy, but if the law says put it on the mirror, I guess you are done

Gosh, that's a story in itself the last time I was towed. It would be a VERY long comment and a VERY long post, but I might just write about it anyway even if only two people will actually read it. lol. But yeah, she definitely seems in the wrong here. I can understand her frustration, but at the same time, sometimes we have to also accept responsibility.

Not for a parking violation, but for a highway breakdown once, yes.
