A brass band half full of ladies

On Sunday, we caught the train into the centre of Perth, our capital, to attend a brass band concert at Government House Ballroom. We parked the car at the train station which is easy enough on a Sunday. Monday to Friday the carpark is full to overflowing and it’s hopeless trying to park there on weekdays. The train takes 20 minutes to get to Perth and the track runs up the middle of the freeway. For some reason it feels very satisfying to streak past all the poor drivers battling traffic on the roads. Government House is a two-storey ‘gentlemen’s mansion’. The building and grounds are heritage-listed and opened regularly to the public. The ballroom was filled to capacity and we thoroughly enjoyed the concert. The guest of honour was Steve Mead, a British virtuoso of the euphonium, which is one of the larger brass instruments but not as large as a tuba. The Perth City Brass Band played up to the occasion and we were well satisfied with the afternoon’s entertainment. What did strike me was the number of ladies in the band. The entire solo cornet section was made up of females, with a number of other players also being female. This isn’t uncommon but would have been 30 or 40 years ago. The photo is of our younger son with Vince's E flat tuba.

Thanks. I love this photo too. The concert was very enjoyable and we got home again on the train without getting wet as there were a few showers around.

@JudyEv - You have been lucky, it's annoying to get wet, particularly in the evening.

years ago, brass bands were often male-dominated, especially in the more prominent roles. Now, the presence of so many talented women reflects progress, inclusivity, and the growing opportunities for all musicians to shine, regardless of gender

@JudyEv that is true, as we progress, the gender equality is more evident

Everything you say here is very true. It was once noteworthy if there were women in a band but it's very commonplace now.

That’s such a super sweet photo! Your ability to take the train makes me wish we had better train service in America. Glad you enjoyed the concert, it sounds like it was a great time!

They are pushing people to use the trains but, unless there is a good bus service as well, the carparks are full to overflowing. We can catch a bus at the entrance to our village so we're very lucky.

It already happened here, and I think they are the first female band in the Philippines, but their fame did not last long. Some of them have gone solo and hit very big. I forgot the name of their band, but one of their hit song is "Cool Ka lang".

This is a brass band so a bit different but certainly there are some very talented female musicians around.
