Oops, sorry about this one.
Not really, I love this song. It almost made the top ten. Of course, the version I love and the version you know are two different versions. I’d never have to “Linda? NO!” a Bob Seger song. And while he did cover this song, that’s not the one I’m using. So Linda? NO!
Shame on the Moon - Rodney Crowell
It’s a great song, and I’m beholden to the lad for writing it.
(Bob Seger)
The idea of Bob Seger covering a country song is head-scratching. But Seger said this was recorded in the space of two hours, and it came out perfectly. The thing was, Seger also said that he wasn’t interested in having a “mid-tempo” album (what became 1982’s The Distance). Then they recorded this..and the record company loved it so much they thought it should be the lead single! Oops.
And yet…despite Glenn Frey singing harmony and Billy Payne playing piano on Bob Seger’s version, I’m going with the Rodney Crowell original. Seger’s version (with apologies to the late Alto Reed) doesn’t have Phil Kenzie, who did the marvelous sax work on Al Stewart’s “Year of the Cat,” gently providing the outro (to the delight of @Orson_Kart who loves sax). More importantly, Seger’s album doesn’t also include “Stars on the Water,” which Crowell wrote and Jimmy Buffett later recorded, assuring me that the worst I can get from NJ Chic is a “slope” today.
Crowell’s version was the first version I heard, so that’s why he gets the honors.

SLOPE. Read the last paragraph. Rodney wrote “Stars on the Water.”

@FourWalls I did read it. Doesn't mean that I've ever heard of him before.

And to think you and I were at the same Bob Seger concert in 1986….

Oh, I love the Bob Seger version. Never knew it was a cover! I'll have to check out Mr. Crowell's original. If you think it's odd to imagine Bob Seger covering a country tune, give a listen to the album it's from (Against the Wind), especially the title track and the ballad "You'll accompany Me". They definitely have a Western-inspired flavor, just minus the twang ;)

You’re right. “Shining Brightly” and maybe even “Fire Lake” would also fit into that category from that album!

He's a Nashville Songwriter Hall of Fame member. He's written a lot of country songs that others had hits with. Although it was odd for Seger to cover this, I think he did a good job.

Some covers people do do seem odd
Dylan, Big Yellow Taxi was really odd and even odder he chose to do it live in Glasgow. I was in shock,
