I got my coat closet in the living room stuck. Remember when I said I was going to clean out closets, and when I did, and went to shut it it got stuck! No good deed goes unpunished! Actually, I did know about the problem, that is why I never shut it fully..However, I inconveiently forgot that fact with my new more functional closet. I have tried all of those suggestions online..and nothing seems to work. I am pretty sure I can get my son done here in the next couple of weeks..and he should be able to get into it, but I hate to wait that long. Nico's carrier is in it for one thing..and I would like to be able to take him to the vet if he needs to go. He worries me sometimes. I would also hate to call a locksmith or drill this out or something. Anybody have a great idea to get a closet door unlocked? You can't remove the knob. There are no screws on this side.

Which way do the door normally open?
Are there hinges?

Yes, hinges but wouldn't be able to take off and on. Just twist the knob and pull it open. I just got an idea, to try soap or maybe a little butter on a knife to maybe ease the lock a bit.

@Ineeddentures No, there is a pin. If you had the right tool you could probably take the hinges off, but this kind of thing taking the whole door off would be too much for me to deal with alone. The door is tall, and also heavy. If I did somehow manage to get them off,() long shot I would have a hard time putting them back on, and I definitely don't want the door lying around here. When this door got stuck before..the roomie I had at the time..just kind of shoved himself agains the door using brute force.and pulled it hard. I have tried that..but he was a very big guy..probably close to 300 pounds or maybe more.

Have you tried a credit card, or something flat like that?

Yes, I have no dice. Online they talk about plastic shims also. I might see if I can get my hands on some.

@snowy22315 It can be tricky. Honestly, I'd just remove the door. be done with it.

@snowy22315 Did you try to tighten the loose door knob? Use a screwdriver and twist the screws on both sides of the knob base (clockwise).

@Ineeddentures No, not working on it now. Not an emergency just an inconvenience.

You can call a locksmith, but I have no idea what that would cost. Does the knob have a flat plate of some type around it? If you can pry the plate loose, that might help access it. If you do it all yourself, you may damage the door. If you call a locksmith, the cost is unknown. I don't know moneywise which would be better to do, I hope someone can help you soon.

Yes, locksmith could help but is not cheap. My son can probably get this open..he has a lot of skills, but not sure how soon he will be down here. No plate around it. There is a a plate partially sticking out though..Maybe I will try prying that offf, but if I did the lock would be ruined. Of course it isn't working now soo, maybe it's worth it.

A locksmith can get it open without damage at all, but if the guts to the knob are worn out, you will have to replace it anyway. It depends on how badly you need to get into the closet? Either way, it's a pain in the patootie.

@MarieCoyle Yeah it is. I have kind of decided I will wait for son..I am going to an event on the 5th and one of the people who goes there has 4 or 5 cats, so I will arrange with her to pick up a carrier if I need one.

Would it help to lift up on the handle as you try to turn it. I know it is not an emergency, just an annoyance.

You have a lot of "terms and conditions" Sir
regarding the action you should take for opening the door. Just joking! Well, calling a locksmith is the best way out, I feel. Don't fret too much!

U don't want to take a chance with breaking the door. We all have to do what we are comfortable with.

@snowy22315 That's one thing that we don't want to take a chance with the door. But at the same time how about fixing it back if removed from its hinges?
