One swallow doesn’t make a summer

One swallow doesn’t make a summer, as the old saying goes, but one swallow nest does make me happy! I have a small place in Wales and this included some very tumbledown old buildings. But one by one I have been getting them repaired and re-roofed so they can be used again. And then I started to wonder why no birds were interested in sharing these new facilities. There were openings to the outside, and safe nooks and crannies that could be exploited. But at first there were no takers. But this summer I have new tenants! A pair of swallows decided that the end wall of the old stable was a suitable nest site, and in early summer we could hear intermittent twittering from the nest they constructed there, as each time a parent arrived some excited chicks became very vocal in anticipation of food. By now the nest is empty but I’m happy to think that I helped a swallow family feel at home. And I can watch the swallows swoop up and down the field and be glad I contributed in a small way. Maybe next year this swallow family might have some neighbours! All rights reserved. © Text and image copyright Fleur 2025.

That’s so cool. My stepmom has a wreath right outside their front door. I’d say every two years a bird makes their home with their nest. Seeing those little babies with their mouths wide open is absolutely amazing.

Oh how lovely! They obviously feel comfortable there. One year I remember that my Mum left a yard brush/broom resting, bristles up, against the wall outside the back door and a flycatcher made a nest on top of the bristles!

You are lucky to have a pair of swallows to nest this year ! It is said that Barn swallows tend to return to the same breeding site ,but usually build a new nest rather than use the old nest,

I would love to have a place in Wales. We just paid money to evict starlings from their quarters. They were nesting in the rafters above my front porch.

How nice is that! Maybe others will move in now that a start has been made.

I am sure there will be nests in our garden as well what with countless trees all over the place.

A bit different in Italian "one swallow doesn’t make a spring". We also had a swallow nest under our roof.

Dad always knocked those type of nests down... He said there were plenty of natural places for them to use. After dad passed away, mom said to leave them alone, they didn't hurt anything. I ignore bird nests as long as they aren't trying to nest in the roof of the house.

I love it when Red neck Indian bulbul make nest in ons of my plants on my terrace. There is one plant in the quiet corner of the terrace and each year we see a nest on it. We love to be the kind host. Once a pigeon made a nest on the top of one shelf on the terrace. And the family was not as well behaved as the bulbul families that keep come every year. They made a mess, but still I didn't remove it till the chicks flew. Glad that no pigeon has come back again.
