Okay, so the pool is not blue, but it's bluer than it has been in two weeks with hundreds of dollars' worth of chemicals, frustration, hard work, fights with the wife, and visions of dynamite and bulldozers.
We really are finally making progress.
Sunday, we did an "extra" stringent vacuuming with multiple backwashes and rinses, added more chlorine and stabilizer, got in the pool and agitated the water, and today...
We have some blue.
We're going to boost the chlorine a bit more, and keep our fingers crossed. We're leaving for three nights on Thursday, returning home on Sunday, and don't want to come back to a renewed green here.
Otherwise we will have to start this process all over again. Wish us luck. But you have to admit, that's as close to blue as we have been in a very long time. Ugh.

Right
I'm looking at the grass
It's green
I'm looking at the water
It's green
A different green but green none the less
Can't you just empty it
Clean it
Rinse it
And fill it again

@porwest I can't remember. Can you write an article on HubPages and save it until you are ready to publish or do you have to publish it right away? It's going to be a long one; and I want to work on it over several days.

@LindaOHio You can definitely save it without publishing it. I do this all the time, although I do often write offline and then publish. But I have done it both ways.

Wow! That water's color is certainly giving you the blues...
Well, look on the bright side, at least the color is not due to the pool's urine content.

@porwest Yikes! And the water is always warmer in certain areas of the pool or ocean too. Don't need to be a private eye to figure out why.

Maybe peeing in it might help. I mean, it's blue now, but man, that was a long struggle. Funny you mention the urine content since just the other day the morning radio guys were talking about that and mentioned that if a pool smells really chlorinated, it's actually not the chlorine that you're smelling, but a chemical reaction from urine that causes that.
Makes you want to go swimming, eh? lol

That's a lot of work and no one would like to do it over again. I hope that it stays blue when you come back on Sunday.

@porwest Just leave the worries and enjoy your trip.Once back from the trip, you can handle it. We have to cross the bridge when it comes. There is no point overthinking about it.

With your luck, by the time you get everything done it’ll be time to close the pool.
(As hot as it’s been you can probably keep it open until Thanksgiving.

Make sure it's covered and any heaters are shut down when you leave.
If I were you, I'd do one last shock treatment with chlorine before you leave.

We never cover it when we are out of town for a few days, but we do make sure to have extra chlorine in it. Normally we come back to a blue pool and run the pump on a timer that runs for 8 hours at night. We weren't even out of town when it went green on us. In fact, we came back on a Sunday and got in it and it was crystal blue, and for whatever reason on Monday we saw some green forming and then the battle was on.
One mistake I made, I think, was that I hesitated to add algaecide to it thinking I could just bump the chlorine, and it would be fine.
I was wrong. lol

Oh, nice! You bought some blue dye! I hope I'm teasing but, if I'm not, at least the pool water IS looking better. Congrats!
And good luck while you're gone.

if you want to have a safe enjoying pool you have to
keep on top of it, other wise just make a pond & put
fish in it where you don't have to do all that stuff.
that's what I did with a pool I got on market place
paid 150 $ & turned it into a goldfish pond.
