Mount Fuji.
The most famous association with Japan is Mount Fuji. Mount Fiji is an active volcano & the tallest mountain in Japan. The last eruption was in the 1700’s. It can be seen for miles around unfortunately not by us. The only good view l got of Mount Fuji was from the plane as it came into land in Tokyo & I share the photo with you.
We actually did a day trip to Mount Fuji on our 2nd day. It took 3 hours to get there & we managed to reach the fifth station but as we arrived the fog & mist rolled in which obliterated the view & also two days later when we went again to view it.
Once we left the fifth station we went for lunch at a Ninja restaurant. There were some guys dressed as Ninjas & a display of weapons they used. Also there were Samurai costumes & a selection of their weapons too.
The lunch was a Japanese style lunch with beef & vegetable hotpot which was quite pleasant but chopsticks are beyond me I simply cannot use them despite trying a number of times.
We had a ride on a cable car to see the sulphur mines. As we went over them you could smell the unmistakeable smell of rotten eggs permeated everywhere. There was no way of getting away from the smell.
After the cable car we took a pleasure boat across Lake Ashi. It was an old Galleon type of boat bizarrely. There were a couple Tori gates we passed. Once we reached the end of the boat ride where we took the superfast Japanese Shinkansen train back to Tokyo which only took half an hour.

Nice picture!
At the restaurant with the ninjas, did you ask if any of them knew how to use any of those weapons on display? That would have been my first question there.
I've tried using chopsticks a couple of times and always managed to flip the food off them and onto the floor or another table.
That was quite embarrassing!
Did you enjoy the trip, overall?

@garymarsh6 Nice! I figured the weapons were just for show and those were regular people in costumes...
I learned to just ask for a spoon and fork in Asian restaurants.
I'm glad you enjoyed it.

@garymarsh6 - I am surely going to read your post. I remember that also on top of Mount Vesuvius there was that horrible smell and it was hot and the heat created holes in my pantyhose.

Yes Anna I have been to a few places like that. In fact we went to another place which was called Hell in Japan. I will save that one for another day.

@LadyDuck I did not like being at the top of mount Etna. There was little bits of smoke emanating out of the rocks. A few days later it erupted!

It sounds entertaining. We were near Mt. Mckinley one time, but it was the same problem. It was shrouded in fog. There is only a clear view about 20 percent of the time.

Mount Fuji is reknowned for being covered in fog or mist. Shame as it looks quite majestic when you get a perfect view!

@garymarsh6 yes, I hear many stories of tourists that most of the time it is covered in fog as if it doesn't want to show it's beauty

Sadly from the air only. It is one of the must see places but it will mean going back one day to see it.

What a stroke of luck that you got this picture on the plane.
It sounds like it was a wonderful vacation.
I do not think that I could ever tour a mine, they are so notorious for cave in's, although I realize that they have to be sturdy and safe of they are a tourist attraction.
We are going away next month to a location that has salt mines, but I doubt that we will tour them, based on fears of accidents. We shall wait and see, some places I can live to go without seeing.
The culture that you enjoyed must have been remarkable, worth the trip I am sure.

@garymarsh6 Thank you Gary.
We shall have a quiet but fun holiday.
I feel like it will creep up on us quickly as we are not used to going at that time of the year.
We are staying within Ontario, but going along a lake that we just adore.

I share your fear. I get quite claustrophobic & would not go inside a mine. Thankfully it was an all above ground view. I would love to visit the salt mines in Poland they are spectacular eben creating a church inside. Have a lovely holiday.

I'm hopeless with chopsticks too. That's a pity that you didn't get a better view of Mt Fuji. It would have been fun on the train.

Here in the Philippines we also have lots of active and inactive volcanoes. One of which is the majestic Mt. Mayon, it is known for being perfect cone. it is an active volcano. this year was the last eruption i just forgot the date. a lot of tourist visits to see it nearer.
