We certainly kept cool. We were gone for the entire later afternoon, like 1:30 to 6:30. Bob and I each had blood donation appointments and we rode in together. However my appointment, which was for double units of red blood cells was at 2:15. His appointment for whole blood was at 4:45. They were still running right on time for my appointment, but by the time his came around they were 45 minutes late. Power reds or double reds, plus platelets and plasma are all done by apheresis. The remove your blood, harvest what they want and send the remainder back plus saline to make up the volume. It took roughly and hour. Whole blood, which is what Bob donates almost takes longer to set up than to collect the whole blood. They fed us--sloppy joes, snacks, cupcakes, beverages, chips. No cooking for me last night. Of course Bob was pleased to have pickles as well. While I waited for Bob I had a chance to visit with others, and that was also nice. Pedro was outside and no where to be found when we left. When we got back he was waiting for us, saying "Where were you?" A youth organization from the high school has been given the opportunity to earn points towards scholarships by volunteering, and this is their first time. It was nice seeing the young faces all around.

Poor Pedro. Missing you and eats too probably. How nice that the youth are given the opportunity to earn the points toward scholarships. I think it is good for them to interact with the community too.

I think these are all student leaders. They had shirts for 4 H and student government, and sports teams. The lady that coordinates this site said they are members of Key Club which is like Kiwannis for kids.

It depends on the host location. This is my preferred local donation site.

I'm glad they fed you afterward... When I was allowed to donate blood, we were given a cup of orange juice and a cookie afterward. When I got home, I'd eat a heavy meal because I was starving!

It all depends on the agency that is sponsoring I think. Also I learned that lots of rules have changed, like no escorts required when leaving the donation table and no longer making everyone drink a cup of water immediately.

That's great that you're both able to donate blood and that you do so, especially Bob with his issues.

For him it is proof he is doing much better. He has always wanted to go back to giving.

I never did before I met Bob, but I like knowing I am helping people who really need it.

Yes. The coordinator for the drive is a person whose name I had heard but never matched a face to.

In a way it was. I also believe it is healthy to give if you can.
