On the road

My oldest granddaughter got to fly for the first time. She flew to Atlanta, Georgia and then went to Chattanooga, Tennessee for a young adult apologetics conference put on by Summit Ministries. Apologetics is the term used for explaining and standing for a Christian world view. At the end of the conference there was a graduation and parent's event, so my daughter drove down to attend and pick up the granddaughter. About a 16 hour drive since they live north of Minneapolis, Minnesota. She slept in rest areas, then had a hotel Thursday evening in Chattanooga. They are driving on their way back now. It was more cost effective than daughter flying, and both flying back. My daughter likes to drive on long trips. She has not shared pictures. I know that she is about four hours from home right now, somewhere in Iowa. I guess road trips can be fun. I am glad they are safe and well.

I used to love driving on long trips just to see what was out there... I'm glad the trip is going well and your daughter/granddaughter will be home again soon.

I was never allowed to do anything even remotely challenging when I was young. I so admire my daughter's independence. Grand daughter is pretty cool as well.

@DaddyEvil That is exactly right. I put my kids in lots of activities that they chose. I was astounded when my first college room mate talked about going out on her own or with friends camping all over the Midwest. My daughter got to do stuff like that.

@GardenGerty The only restrictions my brothers and sisters had was whatever we wanted to do had to be close to home (within a couple of miles) and we had to get there on our own. Dad never wanted to take us to anything. He said it was all a waste of his time. Mom didn't learn to drive until after dad passed away. I always suggested different activities to Pretty and made sure I was available to take her to anything she wanted to do. (I'm not a fan of sports but she wanted to play softball. I took her to the games, bought her uniform and practiced with her at home. I cheered both teams on while they were playing against each other. Other parents sat there silently and stared at me when I was cheering their kids on. I took her team out for pizza or burgers after the game... I was being the best dad I could and doing all the things I wished my dad would have done when I was a kid.)

Yes. It was a long drive. My first husband was a long haul truck driver, so it may be in her blood.

@RebeccasFarm She always references that he was a truck driver and while she was young I was a bus driver. It just comes naturally.

They got home about 11:30 Saturday morning. I am sure they were tired, grand daughter was anxious to be back at home in her own place. I will talk with daughter tomorrow night.

There are lots of really nice rest areas. Now when I went on the road with my first husband we often stayed at truck stops.
