We were chasing the sun

On our flight back to Western Australia from Melbourne, Victoria, we were flying west and chasing the setting sun. It seemed to take a long time before we were actually flying in a dark sky. The collage shows the sky soon after take-off and the next photo is taken several hours later. You can see that the sky is gradually getting darker. And as I write this, our son is just about to board a plane that will bring him to us for a visit. He hasn’t been to Australia since 2013 although we’ve been able to visit him a couple of times.

Wouldn't it have been funny if you flew so fast that you landed with more daylight than when you took off? I wonder if that's even possible? It's got to be a great feeling to be able to see both of your sons back to back!

@JudyEv It does feel strange, doesn't it? How many time zones do you cross in a trip of that length?

@moffittjc We cross South Australia (1 1/2 hours ahead of us) then Melbourne is 2 hours ahead. Ireland is 12 hours behind so We're expecting D to have a bit of jetlag for a day or two.

It always seems strange to take four hours to get to Melbourne and only 2 and a bit to get home.

I also have a ton of photos of planes in flight from my recent trips. When you miss those trips, it's nice to always look at it.

@rsa101 I had a window seat but it was hard to avoid getting the wing in the photo.

It's hard to get photos from a seat in a plane. We were sitting over the wing.

We pick him up just after midnight. He is in Singapore at the moment. He has a 3-hour stopover there.

It seemed to take a very long time before the sun got away from us and disappeared over the horizon.

Thanks. I'm sure we will. We've found a banjo for him while he's here and plan a couple of musical evenings with his uncle and cousins who play a range of instruments. I must remember to get some photos of them.

I recall my flight from Perth to Melbourne 17 years ago. When I was flying above Australia for maybe four hours, from Melbourne to Singapore, made me wonder about the vastness of your country and the time differences. Hope you will have an enjoyable time with your son. 12 years is indeed very long to be away from your birth country.

It is certainly a big country. I think our son changes planes in Singapore and will get here midnight tonight. All up, the journey will take him 25 hours.
