Who’s Surprised That I Ended Up Here?

After lunch with Amber, guess where I went??? That’s right, the headquarters of the National Weather Service!
Oh, come on…who’s surprised that I ended up here?
Now, the NWS, while part of the University of Oklahoma, is also federal government. That means you can’t just walk in and take a tour. However, they did let me walk around the first floor and see a brief overview video of the headquarters and what happens on each floor.
The only bad thing is that I never found out where their tornado shelter is.
Pictured here, we have TOTO and Dorothy. TOTO is real; Dorothy was a prop for the movie Twister. TOTO means “Totable Tornado Observatory,” and it’s designed to be placed in the path of a tornado so scientific data can be gathered. These things help the National Weather Service understand what causes tornadoes to form so they can better anticipate them, which helps give advanced warning and saves lives. Dorothy was based on that equipment.
This wasn’t my only weather-related stop along the way today….

There were signs out in front of the road sign asking people to save the NWS and call Congress. When he gets zapped with a lightning bolt on the golf course he’ll wish the Storms Prediction Center had been there to put out a watch.

No tornadoes right now. Not here, anyway.

The things they do there are amazing. They’re teaching the next generation of meteorologists as well as keeping an eye on storms nationwide.

@FourWalls It's great to know there are places dedicated to improving weather conditions to make life safer and better for everyone. Tornadoes are rare in our area, but typhoons cause destruction much like tornadoes do in other places.

The funniest thing to me was their cafeteria. It’s called the Flying Cow, and the logo is an upside-down cow with a tornado wrapped around it.

In Oklahoma, that scenario is likely to happen! But someone had their imagination going to name the cafeteria Flying Cow.

Things like this sort of make me wish I was a “planner,” because you have to be scheduled weeks in advance for a tour (for security purposes). But I had a blast on the first floor!

I suppose the biggest surprise would be that it’s a government agency NOT headquartered in Washington.

So appropriate that the Storms Prediction Center is located in the middle of Tornado Alley.

Just like the devices they had in the movies Twister and Twisters. I wish I could see this place. Sounds interesting.

Walk in with a cheerful disposition and ID in hand and they won’t jump you for being a troublemaker.
