A word of caution for you sun lovers and people who work outside.

I have never had a sunstroke before, even though I am sure I've come close over the years, when mowing too much, or outside in our big garden we used to have. But Thursday, that all changed. I had a lot of those short stop type of errands to run--not far from home, but they all had to be done in the daytime, of course. I made my list and lined up my son's care and went out the door. I had two appointments, one at the insurance company and one doctor appointment. Of course, both of those places are located where parking is at a minimum, so I had to park fairly far away and just walk it. It was way over 100-degree heat index. I got through both of those, then had to do the !!$#**!!!!! pharmacy wait AGAIN....then stopped to get pump gas. Finally, home!! And absolutely exhausted, my head was swimming,I had to crash on the couch, I couldn't go any further. No way was I dehydrated, I lug a huge thermocup of ice water around everywhere and I drank it. I dressed for extreme heat. It didn't matter, I just got way, way too hot. That made yesterday a wash, too. Just trying to say, just because the heat has not ever affected you negatively, doesn't mean it won't. Look for signs on how your body is feeling and if you feel strange, go home and cool off. Even with my car AC on high, I was still just so hot...took a long time to cool off. I scared my son and the friend who was hanging out with him while I was out running errands. I hated that part. I am so, so glad to be feeling better now!! Summer's not over, so take care in this horrible heat and humidity, friends. Picture from clipart.

I’ve been overheated once (“heat stress,” they called it, the “bottom rung” of heat issues) bad enough to go to the ER, and it was no fun. Drink lots of water! Rest frequently!! Take care of yourself!!! Hope you’re feeling better today.

I took a little bitty nap and that helped today. Thank you, Karen.

you meant heat stroke? Always drink more water. Do not drink cold water in sudden gulps. I am very experience with the heat and the nasty sunshine.

I always drink water, and not in big gulps. I have lived in both hot and cold climates all of my life. I have just never gotten as hot as I did that day. Thank you.

Glad you feeling better, and it gets worse as you get older sad to say. I can barely walk to the bank and I do it at specific times because it keeps you in shape. I drink plenty of water and it just gets harder the older I get. Those warnings for older people are not a lie. I am sorry if you not that old. I am going on 49 and been here a long time, its rare when there is some under 40 on here. Either way, just be cautious because if you get heat warnings to stroke, even at 23. for the rest of your life, you will be more likely to get it. Its been proven by the military and is no joke.

@MarieCoyle The good thing is it happened to him so young, now he is prepared for his older years and will take the right precautions as need be. We do not want a lot of things in this life. Yet, we have to face them. Its better when you learn young so you know how to respond.

My older son had a sunstroke once. He insisted on mowing and weedeating his huge yard in 100+ temps...and he collapsed. He still loves to work in the yard, but he learned his lesson for sure, he's never pushed it that far again. Yes, as we age we have to be more cautious in many things, to try to avoid accidents or illnesses, you are right.

@crossbones27 He thought since he tanned so easily, he was immune to getting too much sun and heat. (This son was adopted, and therefore did not inherit fair skin from me, his mama!) He found out differently!

That's scary. I'm glad you are okay now. My glassed in front porch gets so hot at times. My dumb bunny husband is cold often so more than once he has sat out on that porch- with a jacket on!!!! and just that quick asks for help to go into the cooler part of the house- and almost fallen cause he gotten ill.

Oh, yes, those glassed in porches can get very hot very fast. It's good he has you to keep an eye on him!

That sounds really bad. It can be hard to stay cool when you have so much to do. When I have to be out, I sometimes soak my cloth hat in water but you probably wouldn't want to wear it down the street. I'm glad you're okay now.

@MarieCoyle I found the heat in Egypt almost unbearable. To leave the hotel was like walking into a hot blanket.

@JudyEv That sounds just horrible, Judy. I don't think I would want to experience that type of heat.

I can't remember ever being totally overwhelmed by the heat before. Oh, well...live and learn, I guess. I won't be doing that again!

I am glad it was not a heat stroke. It sounds like heat exhaustion, though and my doctor says once you have had it you will never tolerate the heat as well again. I am glad you carry ice water, had air conditioning in the car and could come home and be cool and relax. You could have gotten so hot you passed out and that would not be good.

Weird how it’s never happened before, but yes, I plan to be more careful being in the heat. Thank you, Heather.

Sorry you got so hot. The weather where I was was quite pleasant, and today when I got back here it was 76. So everything was good.

The sun provides vitamin D but one should avoid it when it is right up

Glad you are okay. I do think using AC can cause the heat to affect you more when you have to be in it. Your body doesn't get adjusted to the heat.

Honestly, I have lived a lot without turning on the AC, and have lived in really hot areas of the US where it was basically on most of the time, this is the first heat incident I have ever had. Weird.

I had sun poisoning on our trip to Virginia Beach when I was quite young. I was sick all the way home on the train. You really have to be careful out in the sun. I'm glad you're feeling better.

@MarieCoyle You're welcome. I remember baking in the sun without sunscreen when I was a teenager. We just didn't know how dangerous the sun was.
