With all the traveling I did on the Mother Road this vacation, I can’t forget to include this song in the monthlong look at where I went. As usual, the main problem is choosing which version of this classic song to use! Might as well go with the original, so here it is!
(Get Your Kicks on) Route 66 - Nat “King” Cole
See you tomorrow.
Seriously, what is there to say about the man? The road? And the two of them together in this song?!
This has been done every way imaginable, from Western swing (Asleep At the Wheel) to rock (the Stones and Chuck Berry) to almost punk (the Replacements). You can go on YouTube and see the song’s author, Bobby Troup, performing it. (I’ve mentioned this before: when I was growing up, Bobby Troup, to me, was nothing more than Dr. Joe Early on Emergency!
) No, he wrote “Daddy” (1940s hit) and “The Girl Can’t Help It,” recorded by Little Richard.
I saw a video on YouTube that asked why people were still obsessed with Route 66. Lots of reasons, I suppose: the centennial of the road is next year, and it’s great nostalgia. Then there’s this classic song that keeps it forever in our hearts.
(Get Your Kicks on) Route 66
Written by Bobby Troup
Recorded by Nat “King” Cole
Released as a single, 1946

Boy could he sing, mom really liked him so I got to listen to a lot of his tunes.
I never got to travel Rt 66 but dad told me a little about it, he didn't follow it all the way but had been on parts of it that ran through TX near Amarillo. One thing I noticed when I used to watch the show is that it was scenic, not something we get in interstates these days plus the speed limits were much lower back then, I think 50 or 60 mph was the max but I'm not really sure.

That’s part of the charm of the highway. It’s a much different and better view.

True but a lot of the places that used to thrive on the route were closed down once 66 was decommissioned, the same thing happened to highway 80, dad used to use it to get part way to Dallas when we were going to see his folks.

Indeed he was. Incredible voice. Very important in civil rights in the 50s and 60s, too.

A wonderful song indeed. I think my favorites of his were “When I Fall In Love “ and “Unforgettable “. He was a treasure.
