Learning Young

Recently my husband and I were at our son's place. We were watching the girls together and wanted to show them how to make muffins. They both enjoy fresh blueberries. I picked up a blueberry muffin mix. I thought it easiest for them, as I wanted to show them how to crack an egg measure the other ingredients and stir stir stir. And of course they needed to pour the batter into the paper cups, and then top each muffin with a fresh blueberry. They had alot of fun doing it. I was glad that both my husband as well as myself were there, they needed one-on-one for their first attempt at baking. I will watch them all day on Friday of this week, and I will attempt to make muffins with them again, but all on my own. I will also get them to bring their stools from their bathroom to the kitchen so that one of them can wash the baking dishes and the other can dry them off. They aren't too young to learn that, and if they are not completely clean, I will be there to help. We are never too young to learn habits that will (hopefully) stick with us through out our lives. ~Photo is mine

If they can learn while they are young they will never go without. If they like it they can pursue it in greater recipes as they age.

That's awesome, it's always best to teach them when they are really young and eager to learn

@rebelann I really hope so. I remember the first item that I baked for my Dad, my mother helped me. He was so happy and proud and that made me feel great.

I thought so too, thanks Ann. I remember my Gramma teaching me lessons when I was young, some of which I still use these days. It might spark an interest, it might not, but it will be nice to surprise their parents with a fresh muffin for their coffee break from work.

So the now can also wash the dishes and dry them. They are learning fast. They look so cute, it shows how much they are enjoying what they are doing.

When you see them, it is hard to remember that they are twins isn't it? I think that they can learn to wash and dry some dishes, not sharps of course, but the wooden spoons and the mixing bowl and of course the measuring cup. We all need to realize that when we start a project we need to put everything back the way that we found it when we finish.

@LadyDuck They see their parents spending time cleaning, and they will be responsible for cleaning their own rooms eventually, and these habits are best learned while they are young.

@Juliaacv - You are right, they look like sisters, but hard to remember that they are twins. It's very good that they learn to do those small house works. It is important to realize that everything we do needs some extra work to have the kitchen (and the house) cleaned once the main task is done.

I still have a hard time realizing that they are 3 1/2 and it won't be long before they graduate from their car seats into booster seats in the car.

I love cooking with the Grandchildren. It is an important skill to learn . And you are right they are never too young to learn. The girls look like they really enjoyed themselves.

@Traceyjayne Imagine the time that a parent could spend cleaning up after a set of twins should they both get interested in baking. They have a nice outdoor kitchen with 2 working sinks, and they wash their dishes out there, but they don't dry them.

Well done! You start to teach the twins how to do household chores ! It is important not to let kids develop a tendency to an easy life!

Thank you. I learned when I was young from my Gramma, who was very passionate about preparing things with love for her family.

I just want them to learn to prepare food with love for their families, that is what my Gramma taught me. And learning to do the dishes will help them in the long run. Willow already helps Grandpa every day with emptying the dishwasher, Harper couldn't be bothered though.

They 'baked' at the playgroup one day, they loved the stirring best of all on that day.

They look so cute and glad they are interesting in learning to make muffins, I could already cook some simple things when I was 8.

I was a bit older too. I think that when it comes to stirring and clean up they can learn now-it won't hurt them. Willow helps Grandpa empty the dishwasher every day, Harper couldn't be bothered.

Such a cute picture of the girls learning to make muffins. You're right about them not being too young to learn how to do things. I bet those muffins were extra delicious with that blueberry on top I know I say this every time you post a picture but "they're growing so fast"

That's a great idea. They won't see it as learning. They're just see it as a wonderful, fun time with loving grandparents.

I remember starting young with baking with my own Gramma. Those were special and fun times, and I think that I did learn a little bit.

It is nice for us to learn life skills at a young age that will be useful for all of us as adults.

I want to instill independence in each of them. And if they learn to bake muffins along the way, so be it!
