Perenjori is about 340 kilometres north-east of Perth. It’s a small town and the centre of a farming community.
In 2018, the local supermarket closed down, then the building was reduced to rubble by a cyclone. The local Shire Council borrowed $1.5 million. They also utilised a $500,000 funding grant for disaster recovery. This is not the first town where locals and/or shire councils have stepped in to provide a supermarket. Such facilities help keep small communities viable.
The opening of the store will save locals a 100km round trip to get necessary supplies. There is an hotel and motel in the town and a few small businesses. All are pleased that they’ll be able to pop down to the supermarket for supplies.
Perenjori gets a great number of tourists during the wildflower season. It’s renowned for its wreath flowers which grow along the sides of the gravel roads.
The photo shows some from a previous year.

It's taken some years but locals are beginning to realise that sometimes they have to be their own saviours. There are more and more locally-owned or Council-owned stores, caravan parks and supermarkets popping up all over the country.

@allknowing Sorry. The wildflowers here are really something in the spring and it's a big deal for people to go touring to see them.

We are seeing this more and more in country areas. Hotels and caravan parks are also becoming locally owned and run.

A supermarket is always a welcome addition to any town. I'm glad they got one.

@JudyEv Yes. I don't go shopping anymore; but I'm lucky that we have a Walmart Supercenter just a few minutes up the road for cousin #2 to pick up my groceries. We also have a bunch of fast food restaurants, pizza places and Chinese restaurants.

Those are lovely flowers.
Small towns here lost their small supermarkets when Walmart built little grocery stores in each town and, after the small local markets closed, Walmart closed their grocery stores in those towns, too, to force the residents there to drive to larger cities to buy their groceries. It made sense from Walmart stock holder's perspective but damaged the small town economies.

@JudyEv Unethical in my opinion, too. Big businesses have the money to do what they want and screw the little businesses.

More and more of our small communities are taking steps to keep local amenities going. Some have bought and are managing pubs and caravan parks. These all bring much-needed traffic and money to these towns.

Love how the town bounced back with a new supermarket, big win for the locals!
Saving that 100km trip is very huge, btw. Those wildflowers sound pretty awesome too. Ever been there during the wildflower season?

Yes, we often take a tour through these parts each spring. The wildflowers can be magnificent. Here are some everlastings. They cover acres of land sometimes.
