All summer Environment Canada has been issuing heat warnings. This morning they've issued a "waterspout watch". "Conditions are favourable for the development of waterspouts over the Great Lakes today and possibly into Tuesday. "Wind speeds inside the spray ring of a waterspout are 45 knots or higher. Vulnerable vessels are at risk of damage or capsizing. "Waterspouts are generally isolated in nature although they can also occur in families of two or more. Spray rings associated with waterspouts can measure in the tens of metres. Waterspouts sometimes appear as funnel clouds with swirling water visible near the surface." Families of waterspouts?

My first wife and I bought a house on Table Rock Lake in Missouri years ago and saw some interesting things when we stayed down there. Waterspouts reminded me of tornados except they only bothered boats and mostly stayed over the lake. I watched one cut across a bridge full of cars once. The cars seemed to have a lot of trouble staying on the bridge and in their own lanes for a few minutes.

That must have been exciting (in a fearful way) to see.

@BarBaraPrz It was! But not as exciting/scary as the tornado that chases Pretty and I down the highway when she was little.

We lived right on the beach of Lake Erie for 7 years and saw waterspouts and many other interesting things.

@BarBaraPrz We saw the Northern Lights, waterspouts, migrating birds...we heard the ice creaking as it built up near the shore..my husband caught some big carp...it was pretty cool.

I have heard of waterspouts, haven't we all, but never a warning for them. Tomorrow we are going for a drive on hwy #21 along Lake Huron, I'll have to keep my eyes open because I feel like if there will be a waterspout, it will be over that deep lake.

But it's the first time a warning has been issued (to my knowledge).

@BarBaraPrz - I remember that we had a warning in the past, even if often they were underestimated.

I've never seen a waterspout. I'm rarely around that much water I guess.
