My Imprisonment

Let me preface this post by explaining that although we have driving through the little town that we vacationed at, we have never stayed there nor spent any time there. And when we stay somewhere, we like to learn as much about the area as we can. What better way to do it then to visit a municipally run venue such as a museum? We visited the local gaol, which the city ran before its closure. Perched high on a hill, overlooking the lake, the adventurous tour began.... Unlike most jails, the front doors were wide open, and there were bars on the outside that could 'contain' you. Inside there were 3 floors to tour. They included stories of some of the inmates and which cells they were held in. On the third floor we toured the courtroom. It took us back to a time and place neither of us have experienced or have had any stories passed down from family members-except for the you'll get bread and water threat that we both heard from our mothers during our childhood years. ~Photo is mine taken outside of the gaol

@DaddyEvil The placard that I held indicated speeding, my husband's said milking a cow. But to see the backdrop in feet and inches looks like it does belong in a museum as it is not in centimeters like it should be.

Now I understand your imprisonment. I remember we visited some old jailhouse in the west of the United States. It was interesting to read some stories about the inmates. You look great Julia.

Thank you, it was very windy and cold, when he took that picture. I had to layer up at that point of the day, but while we toured inside of the gaol, the sun came out and I was able to shed my little jacket.

@LadyDuck It was really cool and rainy the afternoon before we went there, which is why we choose to go there in case of more poor weather.

@Juliaacv Wow, lots to see. In town the courthouse had a sign for an old fashioned jail, but I don't know if it is something you can tour.

@snowy22315 It tells me alot that the first 2 floors were jail cells and the third floor was the courthouse. Now they are housed in separate buildings. And jails are much different from prisons.

It was like no other museum we have ever toured. Although, after going through the gaol we did hop back into the car and drive the 2 blocks over to the actual museum. It was interesting, but also very predictable. At the gaol we were even able to go outside, through the very thick, heavy wood doors to the outside compound area. We could also go to the area that they used for hangings, although we just stood in the doorway and looked out-it was a bit too creepy for us to go further. We saw the electric belt that they used at one point for those dying by the electric chair. We saw the little tin plate and bowl that they used to serve meals through the tiny little trap door in the upper part of the wall for meals. I was surprised at just how small the cells actually were in those days.

Thanks, it was good fun, and I only say that because it was historic and we have come a long way. I posted the mug shot of my husband, it is too funny because the card that he choose to hold said milking a cow. I would think that would have been totally legal as well as necessary in those days in a rural area.

I love museums. I’m always interested in history. There is a small museum not far from my home. It’s a US Air Force Museum, and really small but lots of interesting stuff. Your jail museum is not really something I have ever visited. I did enjoy seeing your picture very much, Julia!

We visited an airplane museum last summer while we were away, and it reminds me of the one that is near to your home. The history of how this museum became a museum was something that I found interesting as well. The town was going to let the antiquated building meet a wrecking ball, when someone on council suggested that the town was easily recognized from the water because of this building situated tall on a hill overlooking the lake that it could remain to do just that as well as draw people on land into the building. That was how they decided to save the building, and although it was mostly emptied of the contents, they still had some and they cancelled the wrecking ball. And on top of that the town began to make a little bit of money from the admission fee. There were 2 students working when we visited, and we both said that with a minimum workforce such as that, they were getting a valuable summer work experience.

@Juliaacv When the Air Force backed out of here after many years, it left a lot of empty buildings, etc. Many people who live here are either retired Air Force, or they are the children of the former Air Force that lived here. There are endless large duplexes in certain areas that are still referred to as ''on base'' but now of course are all rentals. The Air Force field is still there. They did have a lot of really old planes people could go look at, but that is gone now, and mostly we have the little Museum. The museum is run by volunteers.

Thank you, I was layered up as it was cold when we left the hotel, and my hair is terribly wind blown from walking all of the way out on the pier, but it was such great fun.

Thank you. It was such an interesting museum to go through, especially if you have never been to a jail, which was our case. The other museum, which was a couple of blocks away, was much more predictable, but we enjoy going through them just the same.
