I fear this

I went to visit some friends and I met an 82-year-old woman who was struggling to walk - even with her walker. She told me how she often lacks sleep because she couldn't climb back to bed after going to the john, so she just leans on the bed corner in an uncomfortable position. I am an old person myself, only younger, and I could imagine myself in her place. Will I be able to live that long? Will I be able to move and be strong like she is now? I am a lot younger than she is, but I already feel older. I don't fear death because eventually, we all go there. However, I fear the method in which I will die. Will it be quick or slow? If I had no choice, I would prefer euthanasia, so I can choose to depart when I can still wipe my butt. I fear the time when I become too weak that I need people to do that for me. Your thoughts on these?

I wonder why the older lady doesn't just sit in a chair and fall asleep? That's what I'd do in her position. Any sleep is better than none. I don't want somebody else to wipe my butt, either. Maybe I can afford a bidet before I reach that stage.

@marguicha Yes, of course, for the pee, that's a good option but with the 2nd option, ,,,

I took off the bidet from the bathroom years ago. It was very low and my knees can´t get me up again. But there are wonderful wet wipes to help with the butt

I wish somebody would help the lady with her getting into bed problem. Or make her a shorter bed? I am with you on such fears. I am not able to walk very far now. I am grateful I can get around in my yard but for sure I am weaker than I would like to be. Hugs!

Hugs! Yes, that would be a good option too. The problem is that they don't have enough space. I know they can remedy that problem eventually.

@marguicha I'm glad you were able to remedy that. I have to suggest that too. Thank you.

we can't choose, my parents are no longer strong enough to stand and someone has to help them, so I have to try as much as possible to maintain my stamina. Maybe I'm not as strong as I used to be, but at least I'm still able to walk long distances. My father can no longer wash himself with his left hand and I have to do it for him, including cleaning his bottom.

It's our way of paying forward what they have done to for us when we were children.

I think a lot about this as I´m 80 years old. Last week I decided to cut off my bed legs and place some tiny wheels instead. They weren´t cheap but they work. And I keep a cane by my bedside and take it to the bathroom at night.

I am all for euthanasia should I become so sick not to enjoy life. I am 75 and I consider myself really lucky to be healthy. This woman should buy a recliner and sleep there.

Right, I am trying to find a way to remedy a rocker for her, so she can stand and lie down on her own.

@MarieCoyle Do this come with a button that can readjust the height of the chair? I don't know if we have that type here. Thanks for the suggestion.

@Jenaisle Ideally, she needs a lift chair/recliner. My aunt couldn't get up and down well at all, the lift chair gave her a lot of independence.

I like the idea of euthansia too, when you can check out when you feel like it.

Yes, to spare people from suffering as you do when you're aged and sick.

I do not worry that much. I don't want to stress myself about getting old.

Sounds like she needs someone to take care of her. I am now 68 and like today when I feel like I have some sort of virus I am able to take care of myself,

Someone is taking care of her but she doesn't want to wake her up many times during the night.

Maybe sleep in a chair under a blanket if they are available . I try not to think of the future and if I can’t do things.

Right, we should live and enjoy the present because it's a gift.

Prolonged old age can be quite trying. I want to make a quick exit. I fall into the elderly category but can move around to retain my independence.

That's the reason I don't want a long life. I am still active and would be happy to die in this state.
