Meet Waffles, the Hamster

Waffles is my granddaughter's hamster. He lives in his cage on a bedside table in her room. Waffles has kept me from falling asleep some nights and has woken me up in the wee hours of the morning since I have been here. Hamsters are night owls and stay up all night foraging for food, playing or getting exercise if pets. Waffles loves playing and is moderately loud for such a little thing. I am fixing to feed Waffles as soon as my grandson comes downstairs because I can't get the top off of his cage to feed him. It is one of those cages that the pieces lock into each other and this one is so tight, I can't budge it. Have you had a hamster as a pet as a child or did your kids/grandkids? @allknowing I was worried about him this morning. He did not play much last night!! I woke him from his sleep and that scared him. I was hoping he was alive!! Leaving the television on at night must have thrown him off!!

My brother had one, same as this one in the photo. We let it out of its cake while we were watching TV. The little thing liked to explore the living room. I remember the day it climbed on the lap of my Mom and he chewed the hem of her skirt.

@kareng - Mom was not even upset, she liked that little hamster, but she paid more attention what he was doing out of his cage.

Adorable name and fella. My brothers had hamsters when we were kids. I remember them being biters. I did better with guinea pigs.

I wonder what makes some bad biters and others never bite? Has to be handling by the breeders I would think.

@kareng You may be right. One of my nieces had a guinea pig that acted weird. And mean. It actually would try to jump up and bite humans!! All the other guinea pigs that I have met have been mellow little fur balls walking about.

@sallypup Exactly! I know that was the case with parrots. You could always tell which breeder really cared and took the time to train and love on the babies.

Do they really sit with their little hands like that? They seem really cute. We enjoyed looking after our niece's guinea pigs. They were cute too.

Yes, they do!! My girls had several growing up. Peaches escaped and we found her months later in the twin's closet.

@JudyEv She roamed the whole house. We saw her once in the kitchen but she got away before we could catch her. It was a surprise seeing her run across the floor!! She may have survived on dog food or cat food. I am not sure what other pets we had at that time. But cats and dogs were fed in the kitchen.

@kareng I wonder what she found to eat in all that time. I was intrigued with a possum holding its food. Kangaroos do too. It always looks cute.

@kareng My youngest, who had the little creature, was (and still is!) a meticulously clean person and always kept up any pet messes. She said she wouldn’t have another one as they don’t live as long as a dog.

My brother and I both did. My brother's ran on it's wheel constantly (they both had those "Habitrail" kind of homes--the old ones that were all yellow and red colored), and mine would climb into the hole at the bottom of the wheel holder, out the hole at the top, and hang by it's little claws on the edge of the plastic cage and would chew on it (like you said, they're nocturnal, so of course it did this while I was trying to sleep). I loved my hamster, but that drove me nuts.

No, I don't have any animal or bird as my pet. If I have one, it would be an injustice to them as I know I would not be able to look after them properly.

No, I never had one, but my niece had one as a child. It liked to bite people, but she just loved it. It didn’t live but a year though. Then she got fish. They lasted six months. My sister will do anything to avoid getting a dog.

I had a couple of hamsters as pets when I was young. I had a lot of fun with them. I build card forts and put the hamster in it to see how fast the hamster could get out.

I asked my mom when I was barely a teenager that I wanted a pet hamster but my mom said that she was not going to spend money on a rat whatever it was for her it was rats even if it was Guinea pig[em]blink[/em

The hamster was a compromise with me when I wanted a small pet. Gerbils were out of the question with my mom because they looked too much like a rat/mouse. Guinea pigs were too large and we settled on a hamster! My girls had several and enjoyed them very much.
