Waffles is my granddaughter's hamster. He lives in his cage on a bedside table in her room.
Waffles has kept me from falling asleep some nights and has woken me up in the wee hours of the morning since I have been here. Hamsters are night owls and stay up all night foraging for food, playing or getting exercise if pets. Waffles loves playing and is moderately loud for such a little thing.
I am fixing to feed Waffles as soon as my grandson comes downstairs because I can't get the top off of his cage to feed him. It is one of those cages that the pieces lock into each other and this one is so tight, I can't budge it.
Have you had a hamster as a pet as a child or did your kids/grandkids?

@allknowing I was worried about him this morning. He did not play much last night!! I woke him from his sleep and that scared him. I was hoping he was alive!! Leaving the television on at night must have thrown him off!!

No, I don't have any animal or bird as my pet. If I have one, it would be an injustice to them as I know I would not be able to look after them properly.

I either had a hamster or a gerbil for a very short time.

@kareng It seems like it did. I vaguely remember I was about 12. I had a ball it ran in and a plastic habitrail or something it lived in with a wheel.

@JudyEv She roamed the whole house. We saw her once in the kitchen but she got away before we could catch her. It was a surprise seeing her run across the floor!! She may have survived on dog food or cat food. I am not sure what other pets we had at that time. But cats and dogs were fed in the kitchen.

I asked my mom when I was barely a teenager that I wanted a pet hamster but my mom said that she was not going to spend money on a rat whatever it was for her it was rats even if it was Guinea pig[em]blink[/em

The hamster was a compromise with me when I wanted a small pet. Gerbils were out of the question with my mom because they looked too much like a rat/mouse. Guinea pigs were too large and we settled on a hamster! My girls had several and enjoyed them very much.

Waffles is so cute! My daughter had a Guinea pig for a few years, it was a fun pet.

My youngest, who had the little creature, was (and still is!) a meticulously clean person and always kept up any pet messes. She said she wouldn’t have another one as they don’t live as long as a dog.

OMI Gosh, Waffles is cute as a button. When my son was young we had a gerbil named Squeaky. Squeak for short. He was a lot of fun watching him run around his habitrails and in his plastic ball.
