Happy Labor Day, America! A special happy day to all the women in labor.
(Yeah, stole that joke from JJ. Give credit where credit is due!) Here we go with a month of midtempo and slower songs that you can sway to but not “get up and boogie” (although I’m sure there are people headbanging to “Those Were the Days” by Mary Hopkin
). This month is dedicated to @rebelann , who wears herself out with too many of my danceable songs!
Let’s start off with some great sax!
Baker Street - Gerry Rafferty
There are places where you feel like getting out of your chair and hitting the floor, then the tempo slows down. It’s not like Billy Joel’s “Scenes From an Italian Restaurant,” where the tempo picks up and stays up for four minutes.
I’ve mentioned it before, and I’ll say it again: City to City is one of my favorite albums of the 70s. I’d pack that sucker for a deserted island in a heartbeat.
Another thing I’ve said a few dozen times: there was a whole lot more to Gerry Rafferty than this and “Stuck in the Middle With You.” He did some terrific work (the follow-up album to this one, Night Owl, is excellent; however, it never got a chance because radio was too busy playing this song over and over to bother with the singles from the new album
).
I sure wish Rafferty could have beat his alcohol demon, because he was a terrific singer and songwriter. As it is, we’re left with the memories and this song that’s a masterpiece…but hardly the ONLY great song he did.

I completely understand. Hard to know this from the title, as he only said “Baker Street” one time in the song. “Great Sax Part” would probably be a better title.

@JudyEv — exactly! And everyone would know which song they were talking about!
I did a “great sax” countdown, and this song topped the list!

@FourWalls That would certainly be a better title.

It has so many great qualities, such as the saxophone and the storyline that seems to reflect Rafferty’s own inability to beat his demons (“he’s never gonna stop moving ‘cause he’s rolling, he’s a rolling stone”). Glad you enjoyed it.

So much left unsaid, so much music we were deprived of.

I understand that. I have the music playing in the background and a song comes on…I look at the title and say, “Oh, that’s what that song is called.”

Basically a two-hit wonder: “Stuck in the Middle With You” with Stealer’s Wheel, and this song as a solo artist.

I always liked that song. Was it about New Orleans?

Hearing their music through the youtube link you gave us here, made me remind of Fralippolippi, do you love Fralippolippi? I love their music.

I had to look them up. They didn’t get much airplay here beyond “120 Minutes” on MTV, sad to say.
