So much for my bountiful harvest!

So, every time I try to grow something they end up being the most expensive fruits or vegetables I have ever bought. I should know by now, my soil is not ideal for anything. I was growing tomatoes this year, and have gotten like two tomatoes the size of cherry tomatoes, and I did all kinds of stuff I thought would help like egg shells, coffee grounds tomato fertilizer etc. It is disgusting. I do have 3 blossoms on the plant now..but as slowly as these grow I will be lucky to have another two by the first frost. I am considering planting some leaf lettuce though. If I ever get around to hoeing. I do recall that grew well here. Sad harvest, if you planted anything how is your harvest?

I planted as a teenager, and got some lettuce and tomatoes. I put off bringing them in, and some bone head my dad hired to mow our lawn ran it over. My dad apologized, but said he thought the guy would be able to tell it was a garden. When you hire stupid, don’t expect something better, I guess.

My cherry tomatoes have been the very best ever this year …..sorry yours have not done well. I have given some away but am going to have to make soup and freeze that and I’m going to try to dehydrate some , after being given expert advice by @DaddyEvil

@Traceyjayne True. I'm sure they'll turn out just fine. (Put the peel side down when dehydrating them.)

@DaddyEvil you did indeed….but you did say I could do tomatoes so I’m going to try that ….without googling ……sometimes it’s nice to ask a person not a machine !

That's too bad that they didn't produce for you. Do you see many pollinators in your yard? We have alot more lately because the blooms on the autumn sedum are out and there are always at least 2 bees on them, and it is no surprise that the tomatoes have lots of new flowers on them. But otherwise, our tomatoes did not do well at all this year.

No, I didn't see any bees this year really. I am not unhappy though...they can be a nuisance, especially bad though are the carpenter bees...I can't stand those, and haven't seen any.

@Juliaacv I read if you don't have them around you can get a similar effect by tapping the plants. I haven't done that, but I might.

@snowy22315 We have alot of honeybees and they are good pollinators and they leave you alone if you don't swat at them-and we don't.

When I planted I had plenty of tomatoes, zucchini, hot peppers and squashes. I also had many herbs, I miss all my herbs here.

@snowy22315 - We have a very large balcony. I must check what can I do to be sure that when I water the plants I do not water the apartment below ours.

Most of my garden did good to great this year. I put everything in raised containers this year because I am tired of bending over in the garden. If your ground is very bad you could do that. It can cost a bit to get enough dirt to fill everything. But you only have to do that once. Then just add compost every so often.

Not sure it would work well here, it is too hot alot of times in the summer. However, the county south of here is known for their tomatoes..go figure. We aren't far from the county line.

@wolfgirl569 I've done that before. Those potted plants are usually cherry tomatoes, and I want something bigger. These started in pots and were pretty big when they went in the ground, so I thought I had a good start, but they started to get spots on almost immediately..developed a virus or something and I was always running around pruning.

@snowy22315 Often it just means watering a little more. You could start with just a couple of potted plants and see what happens

We usually had a good harvest...most people have more tomatoes than they know what to do with. Haven't had a garden in decades though. I'm sorry your harvest was lacking.

Yes, I don't have a green thumb, but it is the soil conditions too. Last place I lived I could grow tomatoes without much of a problem. If I decide to do it next year, I will definitely test the soil and use whatever is recommended to add to the soil.

Go for the lettuce. Spinach should also grow in the Fall.

Basil isn't too hard to grow. My problem though is distinguishing from weeds
