Slower Dancing Songs: Fernando

Sorry I’m late. There were internet connection problems at the restaurant. Oh, well, now I’m home and contemplating turning the furnace on! (I won’t, because it’s 68F in the house and the furnace won’t kick on until it’s 65F in the house.) I’m also waiting for the boos and hisses for today’s song, a slower song that you can, at best, sway to but not full-tilt boogie to. This month is for @rebelann (who broke a number of chairs dancing to earlier songs
). Here’s today’s song.
Fernando - Abba
Dang, but I loved roller staking to this song. I wasn’t all that skilled back in the 70s, so a song that was slow but had a slightly faster chorus was perfect for me to try things with. (Results: I still usually landed on my butt.
)
I love this song, period. This is an interesting example of changing the language and changing the song. The original “Fernando,” in Swedish, was about a man who’d lost the love of his life. When it was rewritten in English, it turned into a story about two veterans reminiscing about the war they’d fought in (Björn Ulvaeus said he had the Mexican Revolution in mind when composing the new lyrics).
Just think: if they’d had “walk-up music” in the 80s, this would have undoubtedly been the song for the late Dodgers pitching great Fernando Valenzuela!
Fernando
Written by Benny Andersson, Björn Ulvaeus (English lyrics), and Stig Anderson (Swedish lyrics)
Recorded by Abba
Released as a single, 1976
There was something in the air that night:

I think he’s reconsidering things. He threw things out of the second floor of the White House because he didn’t have any ketchup to splatter…because all the migrant tomato pickers are gone.

I have a love/hate relationship with Abba. I don't mind their music and actually find a lot of it quite good and enjoyable to listen to. But my wife is a huge Abba fan and sometimes she goes a bit overboard with it, and too much of anything is often an area of contention with me. Nonetheless, I did do a very short rendition for her one day of one of Abba's songs. She said I did okay with it, although I did slow it down quite a bit. My guitar didn't actually blow up, thankfully.

That’s great! Luka Bloom did a slow version of “Dancing Queen.” Their songs work remarkably well in a slower setting.

No worries at all! It sounds like you’ve had an interesting day—restaurant connection issues, and now you're weighing the pros and cons of turning on the furnace... classic autumn moments! But it’s good that you’re cozy at home now. 68°F isn’t too bad, though. You’re definitely holding out for the furnace to stay dormant a little longer.

Absolutely! I know couples have “contests” to see who can hold out longer before turning the furnace on. I don’t have that: I’m single.

It said that this was, for 20 years, the biggest #1 hit (#1 for 14 weeks) in Australian chart history.

I remember seeing ABBA when they were on The Mike Douglas Show in reruns on the former Southern Command Network in Panama on late night television. I like the song "Fernando" a lot.
