Harvesting a log for the cabin.

I was thinking of buying an electric chain saw, but I wound up sawing the log I used for my cabin by hand. That little orange saw has been in my family for years. Oil it up and it works fine. The log I used was harvested from about 20 feet up the hill from my cabin. The hill was moist and slippery, but I was able to get this thing down the hill without any injury (to myself or the log).

That’s impressive! Doing it by hand is definitely tougher, but it must have felt rewarding to use a tool that’s been in your family for years. Glad you managed to bring the log down safely. Sounds like quite an adventure!

@annierose Yep. It was some serious work. I won't even tell you how old I am.

@TheHorse Haha, now I’m curious! If you could do that much hard work for three days straight, then age is clearly just a number for you.

So, what are you using the log for?

To replace the part of a log in my cabin that had rotted out.

@TheHorse - My husband seems to believe I still am a 5 year old girl who will hurt herself. Now I have no more need of a chain saw, no more trees to prune.

I like my electric chain saw. It took care of smaller jobs without a problem at our last house. Now, I'm not steady enough to use it anymore. I've been cutting the walnut saplings with a crosscut saw or shears. I just can't do very many of them before I'm pooped. I'm glad you didn't let the log get hurt on the way down the hill. (I'm REALLY glad you didn't get hurt during the building project, too. )

@TheHorse I'm sorry you got hurt and hope your knee is feeling much better now. I've done that before working with something heavy... Just a little turn and you twist something and are sore for several days afterwards.

Actually, I DID tweak my bad knee at the very end of my project. Ironically, it was not doing some "macho man" thing. It was turning a bit to put in some cement.

Working on a slope, especially if it's wet is fraught with danger. That's a handy saw to have.

Except for blowing out my left knee. But it happened at the very end of the project.

If you are going to cut up more logs you might want to get an electric saw.
