Long Scams...

For the last year or more, some girl has been sending me texts, talking to me and asking questions... I don't know her so keep telling her I don't know who she is... She told me she's my niece but I don't have a niece, as far as I know, with her name. I called a niece who knows our family better than I do and asked about this girl and she doesn't know the name, either. I just got a phone call from a bail bondsman saying the girl has been arrested and is hoping I'll sign for the bond to get her out of jail... I told the guy I have no idea who she is. He asked if I could suggest someone else who would sign for her... I asked how I could suggest someone when I don't know who the girl is? He hung up. Weird! Have you ever had something like that happen?

Haven't experience that kind of message but if i were you, I will not respond to her message. I would first ask my family members if they knew her. if not I'll block her. I also experienced receiving scam message, that my son had an accident and he's in the hospital. the sender asked me to transfer money but i just laughed because I'm single and do not have a child I do recently receiving so many messages from different numbers that i won in a lottery or that i gained interest from a site. I just block them. But its really annoying how they get my number.

I did ask my family and nobody knows her. I have no idea how she got my name and number. I would block those kind of messages, too. If she hadn't tried to get my signature, I would have let her keep talking to me.

@DaddyEvil she's asking for your signature That so creepy and so scary! but i find it funny for a bonds man to ask you if you knew someone you could suggest a person who knows that person. also here in the Philippines, a bail bondsman, is a person or company that acts as a surety, guaranteeing a court-set bail amount for a defendant. He will be the one who will sign and not other people. I think the girl who introduced you as your niece and the bondsman are both scammers

@Soobinah Here, the bondsman put up the money but somebody else has to sign that they'll pay the bond if the girl doesn't show up in court. Yes, I think they're both scammers now.

@DaddyEvil - Hard to know how she could know your name, but in our days this is not really difficult to find out. She would have given more details if she really was your niece.

@LadyDuck Some of my nieces are talkers and some aren't. You never can tell how they'll talk to an uncle they haven't seen in a while.

I thought so, too. I only texted with her because she called me Uncle Robb the first time she sent a text to me. That's the reason I asked my niece if we knew her. I asked the girl who her mom was, thinking one of the kids was calling themselves by a different name but my niece didn't know the mother's name, either.

I have thankfully never had that happen to me. Both people sound like scammers to me. I’m glad you didn’t fall for it or get to chummy with that girl. I would block both of them!

I have someone who called my mobile and told me "Guess who I am?" I was like "Who" "Guess who I am? You cannot recongnise me?" Generally I cannot hear people well when they are talking on the phone, plus I was at work and cannot think. So after a few "Guess who I am" and "who" The guy decided to hang up.

I don't like guessing games. If the person wanted to talk to you, they would have laughed and told you who they were. I would have hung up the second time they said to guess who they were. I would agree I didn't know their voice and hang up. I only talked with her over texts because she kept calling me Uncle Robb, which is my real name. I kept telling her I didn't know who she was.

My husband got a scam email that claimed to be one of the elderly church folks. Supposedly the person's niece had gotten into some kind of accident and for some reason couldn't use Paypal. Could we help and send money via Paypal for them?? Hubby being hubby got super worried though I told him it sounded bogus. He called the people before he did anything stupid and yup!! Bogus.

I'm wondering now if the house trailer she wanted me to buy from a "friend" was her trying to scam money out of me, too. I told her then that I didn't have the money to buy anything. She kept asking me to go look at cars with her... I kept telling her I didn't know her so couldn't go. Family that is persistent would have stopped by our house and tried to talk me into doing something. Pretty and I kept thinking it was odd that she'd ask me to do things like that after I said I didn't know her. The only reason I kept texting with her was because she called me "Uncle Robb" which is what real family calls me. I don't know how she got my name or phone number.

@DaddyEvil ...imagine... I join a site as Mary Lincoln and I live in Illinois. Scammer does a search, finds a number of Mary Lincolns, and narrows it down by something in my text...'oh I was at Woodstock..' so scammer knows I'm not 20 years old. You see the path I'm cutting... Jamaica replaced Nigeria as Scamtown with the Lottery thing... so I am more than cautious on social media. No one, save those I know in RL should know any personal facts about me...

There were calls and texts I received from unknown numbers, and I blocked them right away. If I knew that person, he/she would text me first. So far, I haven't encountered that long-lasting type of scam. That’s really strange and unsettling, It sounds like someone might be using a false identity, either for attention or something more concerning. It's good that you’ve been cautious and double-checked with family. The whole situation seems off, especially with the bail bondsman call. I’d recommend continuing to be firm and avoid engaging further. You might want to report it to authorities or seek advice on how to handle it, just in case.

I will block the numbers if they try to contact me again. I normally just delete the texts from the girl, thinking she might really be a niece who changed her name since she grew up... I have several nieces who did that and I don't see them often enough to remember their new names.

@DaddyEvil Why don't you just block them? What annoys me is that scammers who use Nigerian numbers and have been blocked multiple times then they use other numbers.

As long as she was just talking, she could have been one of my nieces so that was okay. Now that they're trying to get money out of me, that's too much so I'll block her if she tries to talk to me anymore.

I get texts all the time that say, "Hello, how are you today?" I block them. I don't like games like that. The only reason I actually chatted with that girl was because she called me "Uncle Robb" in her texts which is what real family would call me. The first time she texted me, she ask if I could go with her to look at a car and claimed it was just down the street from my house. If she was real family, she would have stopped at our house and asked me to go with her to look at a car... I was having trouble seeing that day so told her I wouldn't be any help looking at anything. I could only read the text by holding my phone right against my face to see to read it. (I usually ask Pretty to read texts when my eyes are swelled up.)

I had 13 brothers and 2 sisters. There are/were 50 something nieces born to them and 18 more that were adopted as infants. My family is scattered all over the US, England, China and Japan, that I know about. I don't remember all their names and may not have met all of them. That's the reason I asked another niece that I DO know and she knows most of the family...

But the property is partitioned and most of them live three states..

True con artist's go long and far as you described. People will be amazed how good some of them are. New York City has a grip and its kind of just like everyday life there. I have never seen anything like it and they allow them to do it because many think its fun, the art of the haggle, but everyone warns you watch the true con artists. I can see why Trump comes from there. My Marine friend showed me, its probably stolen or just something no one bought for a hat. Asking for 20. how about 5 because I am from around here or close, this is legitimate, bs its legitimate but sir its New York City, how about 10 and he goes OK, because know crap is hard here. He was like 5 bucks was the right price, but you have to love the haggle.

Yeah, I don't like things like that and won't talk to them. This girl sent me a text and called me Uncle Robb, which is what legit family calls me. She wanted me to go look at a car with her the first time she sent a text. I couldn't see at the time so told her I couldn't help her. Once in a while, she'll text me again asking if I'll do this with her or go look at something else. I just tell her I can't do it.

Not exactly. But many years ago I had phone calls from creditors asking for people I don't know. One said talked about a car loan which I know no one would ever put my name on a car loan. I finally just put the phone number on facebook and said it was scam and I had told the FTC about it. The calls stopped after that.
