Photos from Monty's Pass

I’ve done a collage of photos taken in Monty’s Pass, a 30-metre tunnel at Elachbutting Rock near Beacon, Western Australia. I don’t know how the pass got its name. A huge slab of granite has broken away from the main rock to form this tunnel. Neither of us got a good photo of the actual break but the new rockface is grey compared to the more weathered surfaces. A bit further on from the tunnel is a small grotto or ‘echo chamber’. I’ll do another collage of other parts of the rock. There is a 6 kilometre drive around the rock and a track leads up to the top. I’ll have more photos from there later. And I just read that a horse called Monty’s Pass won the 2003 Grand National. How ‘bout that?

I'd be able to walk through the tunnel as long as nobody got in front of me and tried to keep me from reaching the end of it... (I always worry in tunnels that something will block the exit. I HATE driving through dark tunnels!) I wonder if they were thinking of that tunnel when they named the horse?

At the end you have to turn around and come back. My DIL isn't good in tunnels either. Are you a bit iffy about lifts/elevators too?

@JudyEv I do okay in elevators as long as I can be against a wall. I have trouble in tall buildings if I can see out of them. I stay away from windows.

I wonder if anyone has ever spent the night there? It looks a bit eerie to me.

@JudyEv Sounds inviting to me though I can't lay on the ground in a tent these days.

@sallypup You're supposed to be self-sufficient so mostly it's people in caravans or motor-homes.

On the other side of the rock there is quite a large camping ground but no facilities apart from one bush toilet.

As the tunnel is not too long and I can see the light at the end, I think I would arrive to go through it... well, not really sure!

It was only at one part that it seemed a bit restricted.

It was cool and quite dark in that tunnel. I'm glad you found them unique.

I took a lot of photos on this trip. It's good to share them and to look back on them later.

That is a fairly long tunnel. I did a quick search on the possibility of where Elachbutting Rock got its name, and apparently it loosely means that thing standing in Indigenous Australian. That makes sense given it has always been there and what else would you call it really?

I have a lot of trouble remembering the names of these two rocks. The one I have no trouble remembering is Gabbyquoiquoi Creek. I just love the sound of that. lol I had a photo of it but now I can't find it.
