Two things my Grandson did not know…..

United Kingdom

Kids are funny beings …..but sometimes we are funny to them too. When we moved into our current house the Grandkids were able to have a room set up for themselves. We have them stay with us every other weekend and I wanted them to have a nice place with things of their own. So I wanted them to choose their own bed linen. I called them and got the websites up and said I wanted them to choose their own bedspreads …. Grandson pipes up …..” what’s a bedspread ? “ I had to explain I meant duvet cover. On Saturday we went to the supermarket as my Mom needed some more pickled onions. We had the Grandkids and I told them what I was looking for and the Grandson asks ….. “ what’s a pickled onion ? “ I explained….he couldn’t get his head around the fact that we put onions in jars !

@traceyjayne I remember asking why some people called the counterpart a bedspread. Life used to be so elegant. I’ll bet your grandkids would look askance at you if you told them not to forget to pull the chain. Or is that just an Irish thing?

@Traceyjayne Customers still have to pull the chain in a local restaurant here and I’m sure it just baffles younger customers.

@xFiacre I can understand that ….you don’t see many with chains on these days.

You should have told him they grow that way - in jars!

When I was around 13 or so, I called a bedspread a "duvet" and mom looked at me and said I was going to confuse people if I didn't speak "plain English". Of course she knew the word and, when I tried it out on classmates, they didn't know what I meant.

Kids do have a unique perspective on the world, and their questions can be quite funny. It’s nice that you took the time to explain things to them.

I also think it's a cultural thing , too. Here in the u.s. we still use and have bread spreads. In other counteries, duvets.
